Lakers go to OT before falling to Timberwolves

MIDLAND - Lake Superior State's final women's basketball game of the season was a reflection of its entire season. The young Lakers displayed several moment of brilliance, but couldn't quite finish the job Thursday at Northwood. The Timberwolves came from behind to edge LSSU in overtime, 78-73.

Northwood (18-10 overall, 14-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) needed an 11-0 run to claim its first lead of the game, 41-39, with 11:03 remaining. The game was tied 62-62 at the end of regulation.

NU's Emily Kutch made 1-of-2 free throws and a three-pointer to give the Timberwolves a 66-62 lead during the opening minute and a half of overtime.

The Lakers (7-19 overall, 3-19 GLIAC) were 4-of-11 from the field during overtime and missed a layup on a chance to tie with 54 seconds remaining. Northwood secured the win by making 13-of-16 free throws during the extra session.

Four players scored in double figures for the Lakers, who hit their highest point total since their Jan. 15 victory over Saginaw Valley State. Sophomore Kelsey Ance led LSSU with 16 points and six rebounds, and senior Stephanie Fisher and junior April LaCross followed with 12 points each. Senior Kandace Crittendon had a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, plus four assists.

The Lakers, playing in their only overtime game of the season, shot 39 percent from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, and made 23-of-28 free throws. They out-rebounded NU, 41-33.

Maddy Seeley scored 18 points and Gabrielle Rivette added 16 to lead Northwood. The Timberwolves shot 38.9 percent from the field for the game, including 2-of-12 from three-point range. They were 34-of-43 at the free-throw line.
