Laker Cross Country Competes at GLIAC Championships

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's and women's cross country programs competed at the 2023 GLIAC Championship meet, hosted by Michigan Tech, on Saturday.

Men

Ethan Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) led the way for the Lakers in the men's 8k with a personal best time of 26:26.20. His brother Aaron Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) was the next to finish for the Lakers, narrowly beating teammate Reese Camp (Highland, Mich.) by seven seconds with a time of 27:19.70 with both also recording new personal records in the process. Senior Roy Bowman (Jerome, Mich.) was the next to finish with a time of 28:15.10, and he was followed by Ryan O'Neill (Perry, Mich.) who crossed the finish line at the 28:36.9 mark. True freshman Sam Markle (Berrien Springs, Mich.) rounded out the lineup for the men's team with a final time of 29:18.10.

Women

Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.) was the first to cross the finish line among her teammates, finishing with a new personal best 6k time of 25:16.90. Junior Kara Mosher (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) was the next to finish for the Lakers with a personal record time of 26:26.90. Julie Sheehy (Walkerville, Mich.) and Nora Smoes (Reed City, Mich.) were not far behind Mosher with respective times of 26:30.80 and 26:43.50 with both times marking new personal records. Freshman Olivia Peter (Unionville, Mich.) would then finish the race at the 27:05.10 mark, followed by Keira Lamming (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Sarah McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.) with respective times of 27:24.20 and 28:01.80. Gwen Phillips (Cadillac, Mich.) and would then place within two seconds of one another with respective times of 27:22.90 and Olivia Stevens (Grand Haven, Mich.) rounded out the lineup for the Lakers with respective times of 28:43.50 and 29:26.30.

The Lakers will now look ahead to the 2023 Midwest Regional Championship meet on Saturday, Nov. 4 in Evansville, Ind.
