Cross Country Competes in the Division II Midwest Region Championships, Mitter Earns All-Region Accolades

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's cross country teams ran in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Angel Mounds in Evansville, Ind. The women's team competed in the 6k distance while the men's team participated in the 10k race. 

Senior David Mitter finished in 12th place to earn All-Region accolades as he set a new personal record in the 10k distance with a time of 30:46.4. It marks the second time in Mitter's collegiate career that he received All-Region honors. The senior took over a minute off his previous personal record in the 10k (31:56.6). Mitter will wait until Monday, Nov. 8 to see if he will receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II Championships. The at-large bids will be announced on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 8. 

Mitter held the seventh place spot as he posted a split of 4:44.0 through the first mile of the race and by the 2k mark of the competition, Mitter moved up to fourth place with a split time of 6:07.4 and a pace of 4:56. At the halfway point of the race, Mitter ranked seventh among the participants with a split time of 15:04.8 and a pace of 4:52. 

Mitter's classmate, Kendal Delpiere, was the next Laker to cross the finish line with a time of 34:09.7. Ethan Nachazel (35:26.6), Reese Camp (35:14.4), Dominic Comfort (35:47.5), Ryan O'Neill (36:02.1) and Aaron Nachazel (39:37.8) rounded out the Laker men's team as they all competed in the Division II Regional Championships for the first time in their careers. 

In the women's competition, the Lakers were represented by a very young roster as five of the six athletes are freshmen. First-year runner Josie Morrow was the first Laker to cross the finish line with a time of 26:07.2 while her classmate, Sydney Kapushinski, followed with a time of 26:54.0. Gwen Phillips (28:02.2), Olivia Stevens (29:22.7), Katelyn Moore (31:10.6) and Leah Bell (31:21.2) rounded out the Laker finishers at the regional competition.
