Preview: Cross Country Set to Compete in the NCAA Division II Midwest Championships

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Cross Country Championships this Saturday, Nov. 6. The meet will be hosted by the University of Southern Indiana and the Evansville Sports Corporation, and held at Angel Mounds in Evansville, Ind.

The women's 6k race is set for an 11:30 a.m. EST start while the men's 10k race will follow at 12:45 p.m. EST.

The Lakers will be led by senior David Mitter, who looks to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the second time in his collegiate career. As a sophomore, Mitter earned an at-large bid into the 2018 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships with an eighth-place finish at the 2018 NCAA DIvision II Midwest Region Championships, as he finished with a time of 31:56.6 in the 10k race. Mitter was the first LSSU men's cross country runner to compete in the national championship since the 1993 season. Mitter will look to duplicate the strong performance in the Regional Championships this weekend.

Lake Superior State will bring a very young roster to the Regional Championships, and the team will look to use the experience as a way to build towards future seasons. The team, which is predominantly made up of first-year athletes on both the men's and women's sides, will be competing against the top cross country athletes from the midwest.

The top 25 finishers in both races will receive All-Region honors while the top three teams will automatically advance to nationals. All individuals in the top five advance to nationals, which will be held in Saint Leo, Fla. At-large bids will be announced on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 8 for additional individuals.
