Mitter Places Eighth as Lakers Compete at NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships

HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Hayden Park.

David Mitter placed eighth out of 217 competitors in the men's 10K to lead the men's cross country team to a 20th-place finish out of 32 teams with 500 points. Mitter ran a collegiate 10K personal best 31:56.6 in the race. The second Laker to finish was senior Garrett Smith, who finished 86th with a time of 33:56.4. Senior Parker Wyngaard crossed the line third for LSSU as he finished 124th in 34:31.6. The Laker top five was rounded out by sophomore Kendal Delpiere and senior Jack Miles, who finished 137th and 145th in 34:51.0 and 35:05.6, respectively. Sophomore Peter Shambaugh (149th, 35:14.8) and senior Zachary Workman (195th, 37:27.4) also competed for Lake State.

In the women's 6k race, the Lakers finished 24th out of 29 teams with 731 points. Senior Lydia Heimonen crossed the line first for the Lakers – finishing in 94th place in 24:09.6. Junior Rebecca Lathrop was the next Laker to finish as she placed 124th in 24:53.4. The third Laker to cross the lines was freshman Leah Bell, who ran 26:05.3 to finish 165th. Lake State's top five was rounded out by sophomores Alexis Passino (167th, 26:16.0) and Riley Collins (184th, 27:49.4). Sophomore Emily Merten (186th, 28:28.8) and junior Melody Perrin (187th, 28:29.2) also competed for the Lakers.

The winning team on the men's side was Grand Valley State with 38 points and the top individual finisher was Titus Winders of Southern Indiana (31:05.1).

In the women's race, Grand Valley State won the team title with 26 points and the top individual was Sarah Berger (21:06.0) of Grand Valley State.
