Men's tennis picks up first win at Alma

ALMA, Mich. – Lake Superior State men's tennis earned their first victory of the season with a 7-2 victory over Alma College. The win Sunday closed the weekend road trip against nonconference opponents after falling 7-2, at Lawrence Tech on Saturday.

The Lakers (1-3) claimed a 2-1 lead from the doubles portion from the No. 1 and No. 2 pairings. Jake Prime and Luis Valderrama opened No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 victory over Damien Arthur and Luke Van Fleet. In second doubles, Joseph Gilman and Ieuan Lister teamed up in defeating Grant Hill and Noah Ackerman, 8-2.

Prime and Valderrama continued their winning ways with victories in first and second singles, respectively. Prime scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hill in the top singles match while Valderrama notched a two-set victory over Van Fleet with a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).

Gilman and Lister each followed up with victories in No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively and Peter Summers claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win No. 6 singles. Gilman rolled with a 6-0 , 6-0 drubbing of Jonathon Groening and Lister fought back from an opening-set loss to Evan Vergitj to win in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 10-4.

The Lakers next travel to face Lewis University on Wednesday, March 1.
