Lakers close season with loss against Warriors

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State men's tennis concluded the 2015-16 season with an 8-1 defeat at home against Wayne State on Sunday, April 24.

The Lakers finished the year with an overall record of 5-12 and finished 1-8 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

WSU breezed through doubles play with wins of 8-2, 8-6 and 8-4 to pick up the early 3-0 lead heading into singles. The Warriors (12-11, 7-2 GLIAC) claimed each of the first three singles events with three-set victories.

The only win for LSSU came 7-6 (6), 6-3 from freshman Luis Valderrama over Harvey Reed in the No. 4 position. The native of Madrid, Spain closed out the season winning each of his final three singles matches to finish 10-13 (9-5 in No. 4 singles) on the season and 5-4 in conference play. Valderrama also teamed with Jake Prime for the Lakers' most successful doubles tandem, going 13-8 overall and 6-3 against GLIAC opponents. 

Prime concluded his sophomore campaign with a 10-12 overall mark.

The Warriors claimed the third spot in the GLIAC standings and will move on to the 2016 GLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament to play the sixth seed next Friday, April 29.
