Men's tennis falters to Grand Valley State 8-1

GRANDVILLE, Mich. - Lake Superior State men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 defeat at the hand of Grand Valley State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match held Sunday at the Premier Athletic Club.

GVSU (11-6, 4-1 GLIAC) opened the match by sweeping all three doubles events. Zach Phillips and Alex van de Steenoven notched an 8-1 victory over Ieuan Lister and Hunter Koster in No. 1 doubles, Jack Heiniger and Sebastien Lescoulie topped Jake Prime and Luis Valderrama 8-4 in No. 2 doubles, and No. 3 doubles went to Michael Kaye and Nicholas Urban, 8-2 over TJ Myers and Borja Font.

Prime secured the lone victory for LSSU (5-9, 1-5 GLIAC) with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 three-set decision to claim No. 1 singles over van de Steenoven. Prime's triumph improved his overall record to 10-9 this season and 9-8 overall in the top singles position.

The loss is the third-straight team defeat for LSSU, while GVSU has now earned three consecutive victories. LSSU travels to Michigan Tech on Saturday, April 16 for their final road test of the season before closing out the regular season hosting Northwood on April 23 and Wayne State on April 24. Both matches begin at 10 a.m., inside the LSSU Student Activity Center and admission is free.
