Oilers outlast Lakers with 5-4 victory

Lake Superior State men's tennis fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Findlay on Sunday, 5-4, inside the Student Activity Center on the campus of LSSU. For the second-straight match for the Lakers (5-7, 1-3 GLIAC) the outcome hinged on the No. 6 singles slot, however on Sunday the Oilers (10-8, 1-3 GLIAC) reigned victorious in the final set of the day.

With the score tied 4-4 heading into the No. 6 singles slot, senior TJ Myers and Findlay's Reid Wynkoop squared off in a thrilling three-set match to decide the overall outcome. Myer took the first set 6-4, but could not keep up with Wynkoop in the second and third sets. Wynkoop finished off Myers 7-5, 6-1.

The Lakers took a 2-1 lead out of the doubles competion for the second consecutive day. Jake Prime and Luis Valderrama claimed a 9-7 win over Carlos Blanco and Nick Kopylec to extend their unbeaten streak as doubles partners to nine consecutive matches. Prime and Valderrama are 11-5 overall and 10-2 when playing No. 2 doubles.

Myers and Borja Font picked up their second consecutive victory in No. 3 doubles to improve the tandem's record to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in GLIAC play with an 8-6 winner over Trevor Majdalani and Wynkoop.

Findlay claimed victory in No. 1-3 singles to go ahead 4-2 overall in the match before Valderrama and Miles Munro earned wins in No. 3 and No. 4 singles to knot the match back even.

Valderrama defeated Kopylec 6-3, 6-0 and Munro earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Majdalani.

The Lakers are on the road next Saturday and Sunday against Ferris State and Grand Valley State, respectively. The following Saturday, April 16, the Lakers will head to Houghton to face their travel partners Michigan Tech before returning home to close the season with matches against Northwood and Wayne State on April 23-24.
