Lakers roll past St. Norbert for second victory on the weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State men's tennis earned their second consecutive victory on the weekend with a 9-0 finish at home against NCAA Division III St. Norbert College on Saturday. The Lakers (4-3) dispatched their opponents in straight sets during singles play after sweeping the doubles portion.

Ieuan Lister and Miles Munro combined for their first doubles victory with an 8-2 decision against Ben Vande Zande and Alex Vandenberg in the No. 1 doubles slot. In No. 2 doubles Jake Prime and Luis Valderrama improved their season record to 6-5 with an 8-4 win over Kyle Battle and Zach Simonet. The victory also improves the pairing of Prime and Valderrama to a 5-2 record in No.2 doubles this season. 

The Lakers closed doubles play with an 8-1 victory by T.J. Myers and Borja Font over Kahlo Vue and Robert Quinlan. 

LSSU powered through the singles portion with all six victories coming in straight sets for the Lakers. Prime led off with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Van Zande to improve to 8-4 in individual play this season. Font defeated Vandenberg 6-2, 6-2 to remain undefeated (4-0) in singles since joining the Lakers in January.

Lister's victory over Simonet, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 3 singles improves the sophomore's record to 3-1 in the third singles slot this season. 

Valderrama handled Vue with ease, rolling 6-1, 6-0 in No. 4 singles. Miles Munro picked up a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Joe Oleniczak and Myers defeated Matt La Violette 6-1, 6-4 to close out the team victory.

While playing in No. 4 singles this season, Valderrama is a perfect 4-0, while Myers has produced a 3-0 record while playing in the No. 6 singles slot.

The Lakers open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference play on March 19 at Tiffin.
