Men's tennis edges Alma College 5-4

ALMA, Mich. - Lake Superior State men's tennis continued their spring nonconference schedule with a tight 5-4 victory over NCAA Division III Alma College on Friday. The Lakers (3-3) picked up four wins in singles after falling behind 2-1 in doubles competition to earn the team victory.

Jared Guy and B.J. Schutte led Alma to an 8-5 victory over Ieuan Lister and Miles Munro of LSSU in No. 1 doubles. Jake Prime and Luis Valderamma tied things up with an 8-3 win in No. 2 doubles over Luke Van Fleet and Damien Arthur before Noah Ackerman and Grant Hill put Alma ahead 2-1 with an 8-6 victory over T.J. Meyers and Borja Font in the final doubles pairing.

The Lakers rebounded in singles play with wins from Prime and Font in the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. Valderrama captured a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hill in No. 4 doubles but Alma earned victories in No. 3 and No. 5 singles to keep things even at 4-4.

In the final singles slot Myers, a senior, earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Arthur to secure the victory for the Lakers. The 5-4 match victory lifted the Lakers to their sixth consecutive victory over the Scots (4-3) in as many seasons.

The Lakers host their first home match of the season at 1 p.m. on Saturday against St. Norbert College. The match will be held in the LSSU Student Activity Center inside the Norris Center and admission is free.
