GRIFFITH, Ind. - Lake Superior State men's tennis opened the 2016 spring season with a pair of victories over National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) members Calumet College of St. Joseph and Purdue University Calumet on Sunday at the Match Point Tennis Club in Griffith, Ind.
The Lakers (2-3) earned back-to-back 9-0 wins, starting with a morning match against Calumet College. The Lakers opened the victory over the Crimson Wave behind a pair of doubles wins and a win by default in the third slot.
Sophomore Ieuan Lister and freshman newcommer Borja Font teamed together to score an 8-5 win over Santiago Castaneda and Nilson Cano in No. 1 doubles. In the second slot sophomore Jake Prime and freshman Luis Valderrama earned an 8-2 decision over Erwin Krackow and Andres Farfan.
In No. 1 singles Jake Prime earned a victory of 7-5, 6-2 over Castaneda. Font, Lister, and Valderrama each scored 6-0, 6-0 sweeps in singles No. 2-4, as did senior T.J. Myers in the No. 5 slot. LSSU also picked up a win by default in No. 6 singles to captured the 9-0 team victory.
Later that afternoon, the Lakers faced the Purdue Calumet Peregrines and captured their second 9-0 victory of the day.
The pairings of Lister and Font, as well as Prime and Valderrama, opened doubles play with 8-1 victories in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively.
In the third doubles pairing freshman Miles Munro teamed with Myers for an 8-0 victory over Will Harber and James Newman.
The Lakers again swept the singles portion to claim the 9-0 team victory over the Peregrines (0-2).
Prime led the Lakers with a 6-2, 6-1 topping of Diego Pimental in No. 1 singles. Next up, Borja Font won his second-consecutive singles match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Patrick Mudd to put the Lakers up 5-0 and secure the team's second victory of the day.
In No. 3 singles Lister defeated Jayson Savich 6-0, 6-1. Valderrama knocked off Harber 6-0, 6-2 in No. 4 singles. Munro scored his first career singles victory with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Delmer Fleming.
Myers eaned the only clean sweep for the Lakers with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 6 singles over Newman.
Lake Superior State resumes play on March 11 with a 2 p.m. match at Alma College.
