Men's tennis has good showing during the first day of the ITA Regional Championships

ALLENDALE - Lake Superior State men's tennis opened up the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Regional Championships, hosted by Grand Valley State, with impressive individual performances.

A trio of Lakers have advanced to play in the second day of the tournament. Freshman Luis Valderrama, after losing his first match of the tournament, won his match in the consolation bracket 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the next day.

Evan Kornacki and T.J. Myers, both playing in the "Singles B" grouping, were both able to come away with a three-set victory in their second matches of the tournament. Kornacki defeated Derek Vincent from Tiffin University in thilling form 5-7, 6-3, 10-7. Myers advanced with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 victory over Andrew Heuerman from GVSU.

Sophomores Ieuan Lister and Jake Prime both captured victories during their first match in the main draw. Lister defeated Reid Imel from St. Joseph's College 6-4, 0-6, 11-9, while Prime captured a 6-2, 6-1 win over Logan Burgess Hayes from Illinois-Springfield. Lister and Prime both suffered defeat in their second round matches and didn't advance.

"I am very happy with the way the team performed today," said coach Eric Sturgis. "Anytime you get two wins in the Maindraw A flight you know you had a great performance. Having the team total five wins on the day and three players making the second day makes me happy with the direction the program is headed."

Valderrama, Myers, and Kornacki will continue ITA Regional Championships action Sunday.
