PREVIEW: Laker Hockey Travels to Mankato for Final Regular Season Road Trip

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program is set to take on the Minnesota State Mavericks for their final road trip of the regular season.

  • The Lakers are set to face off against the Minnesota State Mavericks for their final road series of the regular season.
  • The Mavericks lead the all-time series between the two programs 31-4-2, including a Minnesota State victory and a tie back in December.
  • In the previous two matchups, the Lakers had a strong outing, despite only coming away with a single point on the weekend, but the goaltending of Alex Tracy and Keenan Rancier proved to be the difference, including an outstanding stick save from Rancier in the closing moments of game two that prevented the game from going into overtime.
  • The Lakers enter the weekend seven points outside of home ice, but they are still very much in the hunt going into their series in Mankato.
  • LSSU Hobey Baker nominee Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) has been finding his footing again in recent weeks, recording multiple points in each of the last two series.  Westcott leads the CCHA in point scoring with 31, and he ranks second in the league in goal-scoring with 16, only trailing MSU's Sam Morton who scored one of his goals back in the Soo on Dec. 2.
  • These two programs also boast some of the top players in the CCHA in assists between Maverick first year player Evan Murr (17; T-2nd) and the trio of Westcott, Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.), and Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) who are all tied for fifth with 15.
  • LSSU assistant captain Dawson Tritt is tied with Morton for the league-lead in power play goals with 8.
  • C. Milburn is one of six players in the league with a +/- rating of ten or greater along with Morton and Murr of Minnesota State.
  • Special teams has proven vital to the success of the Lakers with the LSSU penalty kill unit ranking fifth in the nation at 86.4%, and the Laker power play unit ranks first in the CCHA at a 22.8% success rate.
  • The Lakers will also be looking for strong contributions defensively in a battle between the CCHA's top two offenses as LSSU holds a record of 13-4-1 when holding their opponents to three goals or less, but they are 0-13-0 when their opponents find the back of the net at least four times.
  • Westcott is currently leading the team in goal scoring with 16 and points with 31.
  • Ten different Lakers have recorded at least ten points so far this season, led by Westcott's 31. C. Milburn (27), Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) (21),  Bakos (21), Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) (20), John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) (16), Ross Roloson (Woodbury, Minn.) (13), Carter Batchelder (Savage, Minn.) (13), Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) (12), and Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls) (12) have also reached double-digit scoring.
  • Junior goaltender Easton Hesse (Beaumont, Alta.) recorded the first shutout of his career with a 3-0 victory over Augustana on Feb. 16.
