Dominant Opening Period Pushes Lakers Past Tommies

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (7-7, 4-4 CCHA) secured a series split against the St. Thomas Tommies (7-6-1, 5-3-0) with a 3-1 victory on Saturday.

Ross Roloson (Woodbury, Minn.) wasted no time giving LSSU the lead, finding the back of the net 43 seconds into the game with assists from John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) and captain Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.). Then, at the 2:49 mark, Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.) doubled up the lead for the Lakers, finding the puck off of a rebound and sending it past the Tommie goaltender, and both Brett Roloson (Worcester, Mass.) and Bryan Huggins (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also recorded points on the play. The Lakers would continue to keep their foot on the gas as Carter Batchelder (Savage, Minn.), who grew up a mere 20 minutes away from Mendota Heights, scored his second goal of the series to extend the Laker lead to 3-0 going into the first intermission.

The Tommies were able to take advantage of a power play opportunity in the second period of action with Ryan O'Neill cutting the lead to two at the 10:25 mark, but the Laker defense would hold St. Thomas to just the lone goal for the remainder of the period.

Both goaltenders would make great save after great save to keep both teams scoreless in the third period as the Lakers fended off over four minutes of six-on-five hockey to hold on for the 3-1 victory.

Ethan Langenegger (Kamloops, B.C.) made 35 saves to secure his sixth win of the season between the pipes, already matching his win total from a season ago in November.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Dec. 1 when they host the Minnesota State Mavericks for a two-game series with puck drop scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
