Westcott Propels Lakers Past Falcons in Overtime

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (6-6-0, 3-3-0 CCHA) came away with an overtime victory over the Falcons of Bowling Green (3-8-0, 1-2-0 CCHA) by a final score of 4-3 on Saturday.

Bowling Green opened up the scoring with a power play goal from Spencer Kersten at the 4:32 mark, but Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) knotted up the score at 1-1 with the first goal of his career less than a minute later with assists from Artyom Borshyov (Vitebsk, Belarus) and Cole Craft (North Bay, Ont.). However, at the 7:40 mark, Owen Ozar put the Falcons back in front as they would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

At the 5:27 mark of the second period, Carter Batchelder (Savage, Mich.) tied up the score at 2-2 after finding the back of the net with help from Joshua Wildauer (Dearborn, Heights, Mich.) and Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.). The score would remain tied for a majority of the remainder of the period, but with just under 30 seconds left before the intermission, Westcott fired the puck past the goaltender to give the Lakers their first lead of the night with assists from Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) and Borshyov.

Both teams would battle throughout the third period, but after a pair of strong saves by Falcon goaltender Cole Moore on Laker breakaways, Ryan O'Hara was able to tie up the score at 3-3 to force overtime.

30 seconds into the overtime period, Westcott proved to be the hero as Milburn secured the puck after a pad save by William Hakansson (Oskarshamn, Sweden) and pushed it ahead to Westcott on the breakaway for his nation-leading 12th goal of the season.

Hakansson picked up the win between the pipes after making 30 saves in his first career start in goal, and Westcott finished the night leading the nation in goals with 12 and tied with Boston University's Macklin Celebrini for the national lead in points with 22.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Nov. 24 when they travel to take on the St. Thomas Tommies for a weekend series with the first puck drop scheduled for 8:07 p.m.
