Laker Hockey Takes Down Clarkson in Overtime

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (2-3-0) came away with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Clarkson Golden Knights (2-4-0) after never leading in regulation on Friday.

Clarkson opened up the scoring at the 6:13 mark of the opening period, but the Lakers answered back a few minutes later as Laker captain Artyom Borshyov (Vitebsk, Belarus) slotted home the second goal of his career off of a rebound from a shot by Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.), tying up the score at 1-1 going into the first intermission.

At the 5:41 mark of the second period, the Golden Knights were able to retake the lead after Cody Monds found the back of the net, but less than 30 seconds of game time after, the Lakers quickly responded with a strike from Westcott with assists from Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) and freshman defenseman Cam Kungle (Red Deer, Alb.).

In the third period, a strike from Tristan Sarsland would give the Golden Knights a 3-2 lead at the 4:12 mark. The Lakers kept fighting, but while still trailing late in the period, Coach Damon Whitten elected to pull goaltender Ethan Langenegger (Kamloops, B.C.) in favor of an extra attacker. Then, rookie John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) proved to be the hero, tying the game at 3-3 with 40 seconds remaining in regulation with assists from Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) and Cole Craft (North Bay, Ont.) to send the game into overtime.

Then, after never leading during regulation, captain Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) fired in a shot that answered the prayers of the Laker faithful, winning the game for the Lakers with assists from Timo Bakos (Augsburg Germany) and Borshyov.

The Lakers will now make the short trip over to Canton, N.Y. to face the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday, Oct. 28 with the first puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
