Laker Hockey Skates to a 5-3 Victory over Ferris State in CCHA Home Game

SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. - The Lake Superior State hockey team earned a 5-3 win over the Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday, Feb. 11 at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. in the first game of a weekend Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series. Following the victory, the Lakers hold a 13-15-1 overall record this season and a 9-12-0 mark in conference play.

Junior forward Logan Jenuwine led the Lakers with two goals in the game while junior forward Louis Boudon, sophomore forward Joshua Wildauer and sophomore forward Harrison Roy each netted a goal in the win for LSSU. Laker goaltender Seth Eisele made 25 saves on 28 shots as he posted his seventh win of the season.

The Bulldogs took the lead at 5:09 of the first period when Dallas Tulik scored to give Ferris State a 1-0 advantage over the Lakers. The play began as freshman Kaleb Ergang skated from Ferris' end of the ice through the offensive zone with the puck. Ergang fired a shot on goal from between the circles that was stopped by Eisele but the Laker netminder let out a rebound that Tulik capitalized on. Tulik's shot beat Eisele high on his glove side for his seventh goal of the season.

At 17:57 of the first period, the Lakers tied the game at one when Boudon scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season. After senior forward Miroslav Mucha gained possession of the puck in the neutral zone, he connected a pass to Boudon, who then carried the puck into the offensive zone. Mucha collected the puck inside the faceoff circle to the right of Bulldogs goaltender Noah Giesbrecht and made a beautiful move around a Ferris defender as he cut in towards the goal. Mucha looked as though he was about to take a backhand shot on goal but instead left the puck for Boudon to tap the puck by Giesbrecht to make it a 1-1 game.

Before the end of the first period, the Lakers would grab the lead for the first time in the game when Jenuwine scored his first goal of the game at 19:38 of the opening period. Roy kept the puck in the offensive zone to keep the play onside and connected a pass to Mucha. Mucha sent a quick pass to defenseman Mitchell Oliver who fired a sharp angle shot on goal. Jenuwine batted at the loose puck in the crease and put it over the goal line for a 2-1 Laker lead.

After a scoreless second period, the Bulldogs tied the game at two early in the third period. Marshall Moise scored the goal for Ferris State at 1:17 of the period.

Wildauer regained the Lakers lead at 4:39 of the third period as he netted his second goal of the season. The Lakers put pressure on the Bulldogs in the offensive zone and sophomore forward Benito Posa won a battle for the puck along the boards. Posa sent a pass to sophomore defenseman Artyom Borshyov who dropped down to one knee as he fired off a wrist shot on goal. Wildauer deflected Borshyov's shot as he was screening Geisbrecht on the play to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead.

Roy scored the eventual game winning goal at 17:18 of the third period when he scored a power play goal for the Lakers. With the Lakers power play unit set up in the offensive zone, Boudon and sophomore defenseman Jacob Bengtsson traded passes before Boudon fired a shot on goal. Geisbrecht made the initial save but let out a rebound, which Boudon grabbed. Instead of taking another shot, Boudon slid a pass over to Roy, who was standing just outside the crease and redirected the puck to give the Lakers a 4-2 lead.

11 seconds later, the Bulldogs pulled back within a goal when Mitch Deelstra scored at 17:29 to make it a 4-3 game. Tulik and Ergang recorded the assists on the goal for Ferris.

Jenuwine sealed the win for the Lakers with an empty net goal at 18:44 of the third period to record his second career multi-goal game and his first as a Laker. Mucha and Boudon registered the assists on the goal, as both forwards finished the game with three points.

Eisele finished the game with 25 saves as he posted his career-high seventh win of the season. Geisbrecht stopped 18 of the 22 shots he faced from the Lakers.

The Lakers and Bulldogs will close out the series tomorrow night Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m.
