Laker Hockey Falls to No. 19 Michigan Tech in a Home CCHA Game

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey team dropped a 3-0 game to the No. 19 Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday, Jan. 15 in the second game of a weekend Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Following the loss, the Lakers hold an 11-14-1 overall record this season and a 7-11-0 mark in conference play. 

After a scoreless first period, the Lakers started the second period with a full two-minute power play. The team was able to generate chances, including a shot that rang off the crossbar by junior captain Louis Boudon but was unable to beat Michigan Tech goaltender Blake Pietila. 

As the second period played on the game remained scoreless as both goaltenders kept their teams in the game. Laker goaltender Langenegger stopped a breakaway by Huskies forward Tommy Parrottino to keep the game tied. 

The Huskies grabbed the game's first lead at 12:43 of the second period when junior forward Logan Pietila scored a power play goal. Michigan Tech's Justin Misiak connected a pass from the faceoff circle to Brian Halonen, who was playing the point. Halonen sent a low wrist shot on goal that Langenegger made the initial save but Logan Pietila put away the rebound for a 1-0 lead. 

At 6:44 of the third period, the Huskies added a second power play goal when defenseman Eric Gotz tallied the goal to put the team ahead 2-0. Gotz's goal was set up by Trenton Bliss and Colin Swoyer. 

Michigan Tech capped off the game's scoring at 16:47 of the third period when Alec Broetzman scored the team's third power play goal of the game. Broetzman's goal was assisted by Arvid Caderoth and Bliss. 

Langenegger finished the game with 27 saves while Michigan Tech's Blake Pietila stopped all 11 shots he faced from the Lakers as he recorded a shutout. 

Next weekend, the Lakers will take a break from conference play as the team hosts the US National Team Development Program for an exhibition game. The game is set for a 7:07 p.m. start on Friday, Jan. 21 at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
