Laker Hockey Falls to No. 19 Michigan Tech by 3-0 Final Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey team dropped a 3-0 game to the No. 19 Michigan Tech Huskies on Friday, Jan. 14 in the opening game of a weekend Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Following the loss, the Lakers hold an 11-13-1 overall record this season and a 7-10-0 mark in conference play.

At 2:42 of the first period, the Huskies scored the game's opening goal as sophomore defenseman Brett Thorne netted a power play goal. After Langenegger made a save on Brian Halonen, the Huskies regained possession of the puck and Thorne fired a shot from between the circles that beat the Laker goalie for a 1-0 lead. The power play goal was assisted by Tristan Ashbrook and Justin Misiak.

Michigan Tech doubled the lead at 6:53 of the second period when Halonen scored with the two teams skating four-on-four after coincidental penalties were called. After the Huskies gained the offensive zone, Thorne connected a pass to Trenton Bliss at the blue line. Bliss skated in with the puck and sent a shot on goal from just outside the faceoff circle. Langenegger fought off the initial shot but Halonen followed up on the play and was able to capitalize on the loose puck to five his team a 2-0 lead.

The Huskies capped off the game's scoring at 19:13 of the third period when Justin Misiak added an unassisted empty net goal.

Langenegger finished the game with 25 saves while Michigan Tech's Blake Pietila stopped all 21 shots he faced from the Lakers as he recorded the shutout.

The Lakers and Huskies will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow night at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The CCHA contest is scheduled for a 6:07 p.m. puck drop.
