Laker Hockey Splits Weekend Series against No. 1 Minnesota State after Saturday Night Loss

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey team fell to the No. 1 ranked Minnesota State Mavericks by a final score of 3-0 on Saturday, Nov. 27 at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. in the second game of a Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) weekend series. With the loss, the Lakers hold a 8-9-1 overall record and a 4-6-0 mark in conference play this season.

The Mavericks scored the only goal of the first period, which held up as the eventual game winner, as the team took a 1-0 lead 5:32 into the game. Forward Ryan Sandelin netted the goal for Minnesota State as he fired a low shot on goal that beat Laker goaltender Ethan Langenegger on his blocker side. Defenseman Wyatt Aamodt recorded the secondary assist as he connected a pass to Reggie Lutz. Lutz sent the puck towards the goal but the shot deflected off a Laker skater, completely changing direction. Sandelin was able to grab the loose puck and capitalize to take the game's first lead.

At the 7:00 minute mark of the second period, the Mavericks extended their lead to 2-0 when Tanner Edwards scored his first goal of the season. Zach Krajnik sent a pass back to Aamodt, who held the puck in the zone to stay onside. Aamodt connected a pass to Edwards and Edwards got off a quick wrist shot that made its way through traffic to beat Langenegger.

The Mavericks final goal of the game came at 5:35 of the third period when Reggie Lutz scored his seventh goal of the season. Lutz capitalized on a two-on-one with Ondrej Pavel to give Minnesota State a 3-0 lead.

Langenegger finished the game with 22 saves against the Mavericks while Minnesota State's Dryden McKay stopped five shots on goal by the Lakers in the win.

The Lakers will travel to Big Rapids, Mich. next weekend to play a weekend CCHA series against the Ferris State Bulldogs at the Ewigleben Ice Arena. The series will open on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7:07 p.m. and will close on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 6:07 p.m.
