Mareks Mitens Named WCHA Goaltender of the Week

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Mareks Mitens has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's (WCHA) Goaltender of the Week as announced by conference officials on Monday, February 15. 

Last weekend, the Lakers recorded a road sweep against the No. 12 Bowling Green Falcons with a 2-1 overtime win on Friday night and a 5-2 victory on Saturday night to post the Lakers first road sweep over a nationally ranked team for the first time since the 2013-14 season.  

Goaltender of the Week: Mareks Mitens

Lake Superior State senior goaltender Mareks Mitens led the Lakers to a weekend sweep over the No. 12 ranked Bowling Green Falcons with back-to-back wins. Mitens totaled 120:17 minutes in goal for the Lakers this weekend as he stopped 61 of the 64 shots he faced from Bowling Green. The 61 saves ranked second among all WCHA netminders this week while Mitens recorded a 1.50 goals against average and a .953 save percentage in the series. With the pair of wins, Mitens' record this season improves to 6-3-3. The Ventspils, Latvia native has compiled a 1.85 goals against average and a .936 save percentage in 14 appearances in the Laker net this season. 

This marks the fourth conference honor for Mitens this season. 

The No. 20 Lakers will travel to Houghton, Mich. for a single game against the No. 18 ranked Michigan Tech Huskies on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 2:07 p.m. at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. 

Even though spectators cannot currently attend Laker games, there are still a number of ways that fans will be able to follow the game action. All Laker home games, and away games against WCHA opponents during the 2020-21 season will be available to watch live on FloHockey, the WCHA's streaming partner.
