For starters
• Lake Superior State will travel to Marquette, Mich. to take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats in the team's final non-conference series of the season on Friday, Jan. 8 at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 9 at 6:07 p.m. at the Berry Events Center.
• The series against NMU is a result of a conference schedule adjustment following both Alaska schools opting out of the 2020-21 season. Each WCHA team will also play two non-conference series against WCHA opponents. The Lakers played the first of the two non-conference series last weekend against Bemidji State.
• For the seventh straight week, Lake Superior State has received votes in both the USCHO and the USA Today national polls. Earlier this season, the Lakers were ranked in the USCHO National Poll (No. 20, No. 19) for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
Last weekend, the Lakers hosted the Bemidji State Beavers in a non-conference, home series on Saturday, Jan. 2 and Sunday, Jan. 3, posting a 4-1 loss in the first game and a 2-2 tie in the series closer. Through the first eight games of the season, the Lakers hold a 4-1-3 record.
• The Lakers returned for the program's 55th season in 2020-21 following a seventh place finish in the WCHA standings during the 2019-20 season as the team posted a 14-23-4 overall record and an 11-14-4 record in conference play. LSSU qualified for the WCHA postseason for the second consecutive season and would fall to the second seeded Bemidji State in the first round of the playoffs.
• Lakers Head Coach Damon Whitten is in his seventh season behind the bench in Sault Ste. Marie in 2020-21. Whitten has led the team to a 84-127-27 record, and playoff appearances in all but one season.

• In Saturday's game against the Beavers, the Lakers allowed the first goal of the game for the first time this season. Junior forward Miroslav Mucha tied the game at one for the Lakers with his third goal of the season, extending his goal streak to a career-best three games.
• Mucha's goal was assisted by senior forward Yuki Miura who registered his fourth assist of the season while Hampus Eriksson notched the secondary assist on the play to record his third point of the season.
• In the final minute of play, the Beavers scored two empty net goals to clinch the win by a score of 4-1. Lakers goaltender Mareks Mitens, who recorded his first loss of the season, finished the game with 29 saves on 31 shots.
• To close out the weekend, the Lakers rallied from a two goal deficit in the third period to earn a 2-2 tie against Bemidji State.
• Senior defenseman Will Riedell got the Lakers on the board at 6:02 of the third period with a goal that came one second after a Laker power play ended. Brandon Puricelli and Hampus Eriksson each notched an assist on the play.
• The Lakers, trailing by a goal with less than two minutes left in regulation, pulled Mitens for an extra attacker and junior forward Ashton Calder netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season to tie the game at two with 1:37 left in the game.
• Riedell registered his second point of the game with an assist while Jacob Nordqvist tallied the primary assist on the play as he took the original shot that was deflected by Calder. The two-point effort marked Riedell's second multi-point game of the season and the 10th of his career.
• Following 65 minutes of play, the score remained tied at two and the Lakers would win the overtime shootout in the seventh round. Mucha scored the decisive goal to give the Lakers the shootout victory.
• Senior goaltender Mareks Mitens was in net for the Lakers and stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced in the game to register his third tie of the season.
• The Lakers power play has not been able to connect through the first six games of the season with the team going 0-for-27 with the man advantage. LSSU's penalty kill has killed off 28 of 31 power plays, giving the team a 90.3% success rate while down a skater.
•The Lakers hold a 44-74-13 record all-time against Northern Michigan. The two teams most recently played each other in Feb. 2019, with each recording a win at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie.

• The Lakers return a strong back end presence with five defensemen who played 30 or more games last season as well as the team's starting goaltender, Mareks Mitens.
• Heading into the 2020-21 season, the returning Laker defensemen combine for 357 career collegiate games played while adding 22 goals, and 94 assists for a total of 116 points.
• Senior defenseman Lukas Kaelble, the Laker captain, has recorded 11 multi-point games in his career, including two this season. Most recently, the defenseman posted a two assist game against Alabama Huntsville on Dec. 6 in the Lakers 3-2 win.
• The senior strung together a three game point streak (0-5-5) earlier this season, spanning from Nov. 29 at Adrian to Dec. 6 against UAH.
• Kaelble was awarded the team's Most Valuable Defenseman at the close of the 2019-20 season. The defenseman played in all 41 games for the Lakers last season and totaled 12 points (2G, 10A). Kaelble led the Lakers in blocked shots with 39.
• Senior defenseman Will Riedell scored his first goal of the season on Nov. 27 in the Lakers 5-3 win over Adrian College and would add an assist later in the game to record his first multi-point game of the season. Riedell's second multi-point game of the season and the 10th of his career came on Jan. 3 against Bemidji as he scored the game's opening goal and assisted on the game tying goal.
• With six points (2G, 4A) this season, Riedell ranks second on the Lakers in points.
• Riedell and Kaelble both rank in the top eight in points among WCHA defensemen this season.
• On Thursday, Dec. 3, Will Riedell was named WCHA Defenseman of the Month for his play in the month of November. Riedell led all WCHA defenseman in points (3) and was tied for second in points among all NCAA defensemen. Among WCHA defensemen, Riedell was tied for first in goals (1) and assists (2) while also ranking second in plus/minus (+4).
• Riedell is coming off a career year as he appeared in all 41 games for the Lakers during the 2019-20 season and set personal highs in all offensive categories. The alternate captain recorded five goals, 13 assists and 18 points and ranked first among Laker defensemen in assists and points.
• Riedell led the team with a +13 rating and registered five multi-point games, including a career-best three point game (3A) on Feb. 7 at Michigan Tech. His best month of the season came in February as he recorded nine points (3G, 6A) in eight games and was named WCHA Defenseman of the Week on Feb. 10 and was the WCHA Defenseman of the Month for February.
• Junior Jacob Nordqvist and junior Mitchell Oliver round out the remaining upperclassmen returning on the blue line for the Lakers. Nordqvist played in 35 games for the Lakers in 2019-20 and finished the season with 13 points (2G, 11A). He was tied for second on the team in game winning goals with two. Oliver competed in 38 games for the Lakers last season and recorded eight assists. In his first game back into the lineup this season following an off-season injury, Oliver scored the shootout winning goal in the fifth round of the Lakers 2-2 tie against UAH on Dec. 5.
• Three of last year's regulars recorded at least 12 points - Will Riedell (18), Nordqvist (13), and Kaelble (12).
BETWEEN THE PIPES
• Senior goaltender Mareks Mitens has started all eight games this season for the Lakers, posting a 2-1-3 record with a 1.68 goals against average and a .938 save percentage.
• Freshman goaltender Ethan Langenegger has played in two games for the Lakers this season, including his first career appearance on Nov. 29 against Adrian. Langenegger earned his first colleigiate win on Dec. 6 against Alabama Huntsville as the freshman goalie played the final twenty minutes of the 3-2 game.
• Sophomore goaltender Seth Eisele entered the game for the Lakers at the start of the third period on Nov. 22 against Michigan Tech anad saved all seven shots he faced from the Huskies. Eisele, who recorded an assist on Calder's goal, earned his first collegiate win in his first appearance in net as a Laker.
• On Thursday, Dec. 3, Mareks Mitens was named WCHA Goaltender of the Month for his play in the month of November. Mitens allowed five goals over the course of four games for the Lakers, posting a 2-0-1 record which included his sixth career shutout on Nov. 21 in a 0-0 tie against Michigan Tech. Among WCHA goaltenders in the month of November, the senior netminder ranked first in minutes played (204:33), first in saves made (77), first in shots faced (82), first in wins (2), and tied for first in shutouts (1).
• Mitens was awarded the WCHA's Goaltender of the Week award for his play against Michigan Tech on Nov. 21-22, as he stopped 41 of the 42 shots he faced in 105:00 minutes in net. The senior goalie finished the weekend with a .976 save percentage and a 0.57 goals against average.
•Mitens will backstop the Lakers this season, following a strong 2019-20 season in net (2.57 GAA, .911%). Mittens appeared in 39 games, making 38 starts and finished the season with a career-best 13 wins.
• Mitens ranked first among all WCHA goaltenders in games played and games started, and played more minutes (2291:59) than any other NCAA netminder in 2019-20. The Ventspils, Latvia native, who finished the season with 1,002 saves, was one of three NCAA goalies to make 1000 or more saves last season.
• The netminder finished the season in fifth place among WCHA goalies in save percentage and seventh place among that same group in goals against average
• Mitens was named WCHA Goaltender of the Week on Dec. 16. 2019 after stopping 64 of 67 shots against No. 10 Bowling Green in a weekend split.
• In the final month of the regular season, Mitens recorded a pair of shutouts (2/14/20 vs. UAH, 2/28/20 at Ferris State) to bring his career shutout total to five. The Laker goalie would go on to stop a season-high 45 shots in the Lakers 5-3 win over Bemidji State in game two of the WCHA Quarterfinals last season.
• Mitens appeared in 11 games for the Lakers in 2018-19 and 19 games in his freshman season in 2017-18.
Lakers vs. Northern Michigan
• The Lakers and Bemidji State Beavers will meet for the first time this season, with a conference series scheduled for the first weekend of February in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. This series will be counted as non-conference in the standings.
• The Lakers will match up against the Wildcats for the first time since Feb. 2019, with each team recording a win at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie.
• Lake State currently holds possession of the Cappo Cup, winning last season's series by a one-goal differential. The winner of the regular season series each year is awarded the Cappo Cup, given annually since the 1994-95 season. The first installment was awarded by the late Monsignor Louis Cappo in 1991.
•In the all-time series between the two teams, the Lakers hold a 44-74-13 record against Northern Michigan.
• Against NMU, Ashton Calder leads the teams with seven points (2G, 5A) while Lukas Kaelble ranks second among his teammates with five career points (5A) against the Wildcats.

• Northern Michigan is led by Grant Potulny, who is in his fourth season leading the Wildcats.
• In three previous seasons with the team, Coach Potulny boasts a 64-47-9 record and has led the team to two 20+ win seasons in his three seasons at the helm.
• The Wildcats have played six games this season, compiling a record of 2-4-0. NMU most recently played a series againat the No. 4 Minnesota State Mavericks, postinga pair of losses.
• Offensively, the Wildcats are led by sophomore AJ Vanderbeck, who has recorded seven points (5G, 2A) in six games this season.
• NMU brings back 18 individuals who saw ice-time in the 2019-20 season, including all three goaltenders and three of its top-four scorers. The team returns 79 goals from the 2019-20 season as well as 219 points, including league-leading scorer Griffin Loughran who posted 39 points (23-16-39) as a sophomore.
• The Wildcats add 13 new faces to the team in 2020-21, including three transfers.
• In goal, junior Nolan Kent and redshirt junior Connor Ryckman have split time for the Wildcats. Both netminders have started three games this season for Northern.
• Through six games, Bemidji's special teams have combined for a penalty kill percentage of 72.7% (16-for-22) while the power play is running at a 20.0% (4-for-20) success rate.

Additionally, two transfer forwards (Brandon Puricelli, UMD; Jack Jeffers, UAH) will join the Lakers this year.
• DenBeste played for the Johnstown Tomahawks (NAHL) during the 2019-20 season, posting 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points in 44 games. DenBeste spent the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons playing for the Soo Indians in Sault Ste. Marie.
• Posa spent the 2019-20 season split between the Green Bay Gamblers and the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL and combined for 14 points (7G, 7A) in 42 games.
• Wildauer played for the Coquitlam Express of the BCHL and posted 57 points (22G, 35A) in 51 games played during the 2019-20 season. Wildauer was named the team's Top Forward.
• Williams spent the 2019-20 season playing for the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL and registered 31 points (10G, 21A) in 58 games played.
• Bengtsson recorded 16 points (2G, 14A) in 29 games with the Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL) during the 2019-20 season.
• Boryshov played for the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL during the 2019-20 season and posted 17 points (5G, 12A) in 48 games.
• Gervais split the 2019-20 season between the Bonnyville Pontiacs (AJHL) and the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (BCHL). Gervais totaled 52 points (8G, 44A) in 53 games.
• Langenegger posted a 23-15-3 record in the 2019-20 season for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the BCHL, with a 2.79 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. Langenegger was named the Silverbacks Most Valuable Player in 2019-20.
Laker firsts
• Ten student-athletes made their collegiate debut as a Laker against Michigan Tech in the first weekend of play - Seth Eisele, Jeremy Gervais, Joshua Wildauer, Jacob Bengtsson, Spencer DenBeste, Jack Jeffers, Brandon Puricelli, Benito Posa, Michael Mannara, and Tyler Williams. Ethan Langenegger and Artyom Boryshov each made their collegiate debut at Adrian College on Nov. 29.
• Jeffers (G) and Puricelli (A) each notched their first point as a Laker in the team's 4-1 win over Tech on Nov. 22.
• Jeffers, a transfer from Alabama Huntsville, scored the game winning goal in his first game as a Laker, against his former teammate at UAH, Michigan Tech goaltender Mark Sinclair.
• Puricelli, a transfer from Minnesota-Duluth, scored his first goal as a Laker on Nov. 27 against Adrian. With an assist earlier in the same game, Puricelli recorded his first career multi-point game.
• Jacob Bengtsson (A) and Jeremy Gervais each registered their first collegiate point in the Lakers game against Adrian on Nov. 27. With a pair of assists in the game, Gervais recorded his first career multi-point game as well.
• Eisele recorded his first career win in his first appearance in goal on Sunday, Nov. 22 against Michigan Tech. The goaltender also registered his first career point in the game with an assist on the Lakers third goal.
• Wildauer notched his first career point with an assist on Dec. 5 in the Lakers 2-2 tie against Alabama Huntsville.
• Langenegger recorded his first career win on Dec. 6 against Alabama Huntsville.

• The Laker captain has recorded 47 points (5G, 42A) in 112 career games for Lake State, including five points this season (5A). The senior ranks third among active point leaders on the team, and leads all active Laker defensemen in career points.
• Kaelble has recorded 11 multi-point games in his career, including two this season. Most recently, the defenseman posted a two assist game against Alabama Huntsville on Dec. 6 in the Lakers 3-2 win.
• Earlier this season, the senior posted a three game point streak (0-5-5), spanning Nov. 29 - Dec. 6.
• Kaelble appeared in all 41 games for the Lakers during the 2019-20 season, tying his previous career-high in goals while also posting 10 assists. The Mannheim, Germany native led the Lakers in blocked shots last season with 39 and has totaled 95 in his career.
• The defenseman served as an alternate captain as a junior and was named the team's Most Valuable Defenseman for the 2019-20 season.
• In addition to his leadership experience with the Lakers, Kaelble served as captain of the Jungadler Mannheim U19 team of the German Development League (DNL) during the 2015-16 season. The defenseman has also represented his home country in numerous international tournaments including the World Junior Championships at the U17, U18 and U20 level.

•Senior forward Hampus Eriksson recorded an assist in both games of the Lakers most recent series against Bemiji, bringing his season total up to four points (1G, 3A). Eriksson scored the Lakers first goal of the season on Nov. 22 against Michigan Tech while notching his 50th career point with an assist in the Lakers 5-3 win over Adrian on Nov. 27.
• Senior Hampus Eriksson, a native of Forsbacka, Sweden, played in all 41 games for the Lakers in 2019-20 and set career highs in goals, assists, and points. The forward ranked second on the team in assists, fifth on the team in points, tied for fifth on the team in goals, tied for second on the team in game winning goals, and fifth on the team in shots on goal.
• Eriksson, who was named an alternate captain for the 2020-21 season, led the Lakers in face-offs taken last season (773). The center ranked first on the Lakers with 404 face-off wins and ranked second on the team in face-off win percentage (.523%).
• Junior Jacob Nordqvist, a native of Gothenburg, Sweden, played in 35 games for the Lakers in 2019-20 and finished the season with 13 points (2G, 11A). The defenseman was tied for second on the team in game winning goals with two.
• This season, Nordqvist has posted three assists in eight games for the Lakers, including the primary assist on the game-tying goal late in the third period in the team's 2-2 tie against Bemidji State on Jan. 3.
• Sophomore defenseman Arvid Henrikson, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, played in 37 games for the Lakers in his rookie season. Henrikson notched a goal and an assist last season while also ranking third on the team in blocked shots.
• Freshman defenseman Jacob Bengtsson, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, rounds out the Laker skaters from the European country.

• Senior forward Chase Gamelin and junior forward Ashton Calder are both natives of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
• Calder is the Lakers active points leader with 57 career points (22G, 35A) in 86 games played. Calder, the team's leading point and goal scorer this season, has two multi-point games and goals in five of the team's eight games this season.
• Calder, who was named the WCHA Forward of the Month in November, is tied for third in goals among all WCHA players, and is one of six players in the conference to record two or more game winning goals this season.
• Calder posted a three game point streak (3G, 2A) from Nov. 22 - Nov. 29 which included a three game goal streak (3G). The latter ties his previous career best. Calder's first goal of the season was a between-the-legs highlight reel goal while his second and third goals each stood as the game winners. The alternate captain has tied his previous season high with two game winning goals while also scoring a game-tying goal with 1:37 left in the game against Bemidji State on Jan. 3.
• In 2019-20, Calder ranked second on the team in points, tied for second on the team in goals, third on the team in assists, tied for second on the team in goal winning goals, tied for second on the team in power play goals, tied for second on the team in power play points with five, tied for first on the team in shorthanded goals and second on the Lakers in shots on goal. The forward appeared in all 41 games for the Lakers in 2019-20 and set new career-highs in goals (12) and points (28).
• Calder recorded nine multi-point games, which included two three-point efforts, and was named WCHA Forward of the Week on two different occasions. The offensively-gifted forward finished the season tied for 15th place among all WCHA players in points and ranked among the top three in most offensive categories among his teammates.
• The junior will become the first Sault Ste Marie, Mich. native to wear a letter since Steven Kaunisto served as captain during the 2009-10 season.
• In his first season, Calder finished the season ranked second among WCHA freshmen in both assists and points. He was named WCHA Rookie of the Week two times, WCHA Rookie of the Month twice and was a member of the WCHA All-Rookie Team.
• Gamelin scored his first goal of the season in the Lakers 2-2 tie against the Alabama Huntsville Chargers on Dec. 5. With the goal, Gamelin ties his previous single season total from the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
• The senior forward skated in 29 games for the Lakers in 2019-20 and tied his previous career high in goals and points.
• Including Gamelin and Calder, the Lakers have seven players from Michigan on the roster.

• Two of the forwards that the Lakers will rely on for offense this season are junior Pete Veillette, a native of Drummondville, Quebec, and sophomore Louis Boudon, a native of Grenoble, France.
• Boudon has totaled three points through the first eight games of the season for the Lakers with a goal and two assists.
• Boudon scored his first goal of the season on Nov. 29 at Adrian when he redirected a shot by senior captain Lukas Kaelble. Earlier this season, Boudon posted a three game point streak (1G, 2A).
• As a freshman, Boudon appeared in 40 games for the Lakers in 2019-20, was third on the Lakers in points with 27 and ranked first among his teammates in assists with 21 during his first collegiate season. The forward was named WCHA Rookie of the Week twice during the 2019-20 season, WCHA Rookie of the Month in February, and received the Lakers Outstanding Freshman Award.
• In 2019-20, Boudon ranked first on the team in assists, third on the team in points, tied for third on the team in goals, second on the team in +/-. tied for second on the team in power play goals, led the team in power play points, third on the team in shots on goal.
• The sophomore, who was the only Laker to reach the 20-assist mark last season, ranked seventh among all WCHA players in assists and 17th among all WCHA players in points. Boudon finished his rookie campaign tied for second among WCHA freshmen in scoring.
• Boudon, who was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team, posted two five-game point streaks in his first season as well as three three-point games.
• Veillette has notched three points for the Lakers this season (1G, 2A) in eight games. The junior forward sealed the Lakers first win of the season on Nov. 22 against Michigan Tech when he netted an empty net goal with nine seconds left to play. The junior forward added an assist earlier in the game to tally his first multi-point game of the season. Veillette's most recent point came in the team's 3-2 win over Alabama Huntsville on Dec. 6 as he notched an assist.
• Veillette, who appeared in all 41 games for the Lakers in 2019-20, set career highs in goals (12), assists (14), and points (26).
• In 2019-20, Veillette ranked fourth on the team in points, tied for second on the team in goals, fourth on the team in assists, led the team in game winning goals, tied for second on the team in power play goals, and ranked fourth on the team in shots on goal.
• Veillette proved to be a clutch performer for the Lakers last season as he netted three game winners while also adding two goals in the second WCHA overtime for the Lakers. In addition, Veillette assisted on two of the Lakers game winning goals in the 2019-20 season while also notching the game tying goal with :45 seconds left to play at Michigan Tech on Feb. 8, 2020.
• Last season, Veillette recorded a career-high five game point streak with three goals and two assists in that span.

• Yuki Miura, a senior forward, scored his first goal of the season in the Lakers 5-3 win over Adrian College on Nov. 27. In the same game, Miura assisted on the Lakers first goal to record his first multi-point game of the 2020-21 season and the third of his career.
• Most recently, Miura recorded an assist in the Jan. 2 game against Bemidji State to bring his season point total up to five (1G, 4A).
• The Tokyo, Japan native ranks second on the Lakers in blocked shots with nine and is tied for third place in the category among WCHA forwards.
• Miura set new season highs in assists (12) and points (14) last season. Miura, who doubled his career point total through the first four games of the season, led all forwards in the WCHA in blocked shots last season with 34.
• Yuki Miura was one of two Japanese athletes playing NCAA Division I Hockey in 2019-20 and represented Japan in the 2019 IIHF Men's World Championships following the conclusion of the 2018-19 Laker season. Miura played in five games at the international tournament.
• It marked the second consecutive year Miura got the nod to compete for Japan as he played in the 2018 Championships, where he notched four assists in five games.
WINNING THE DRAWS
• Sophomore Dustin Manz, currently ranks fourth among all WCHA players with a .645 faceoff percentage, as he has won 80 of the 124 draws he has taken for the Lakers this season.
• As a freshman, Manz led the team with a .587 faceoff win percentage during the 2019-20 season as he won 242 of the 412 draws he took. Manz, who ranked second on the Lakers in face-off wins with 242, had the fourth best faceoff win percentage in the WCHA.
• Senior Hampus Eriksson led the Lakers in face-offs taken last season (773). The center ranked first on the Lakers with 404 face-off wins and ranked second on the team in face-off win percentage (.523%).
• Eriksson ranked ninth among all active NCAA players in face-offs won in 2019-20 with 404.
• The Lakers won more face-offs than any other NCAA team with 1,265 draws won.
Players of the week/month
• On Thursday, Dec. 3, Ashton Calder was named WCHA Forward of the Month for his play in the month of November. Calder led all WCHA players in points with five (3G, 2A). Calder scored back-to-back game winning goals for the Lakers and was tied for first among all NCAA skaters in game winning goals (2) in November.
• On Thursday, Dec. 3, Will Riedell was named WCHA Defenseman of the Month for his play in the month of November. Riedell led all WCHA defenseman in points (3) and was tied for second in points among all NCAA defensemen. Among WCHA defensemen, Riedell was tied for first in goals (1) and assists (2) while also ranking second in plus/minus (+4).
• On Thursday, Dec. 3, Mareks Mitens was named WCHA Goaltender of the Month for his play in the month of November. Mitens allowed five goals over the course of four games for the Lakers, posting a 2-0-1 record which included his sixth career shutout on Nov. 21 in a 0-0 tie against Michigan Tech. Among WCHA goaltenders in the month of November, the senior netminder ranked first in minutes played (204:33), first in saves made (77), first in shots faced (82), first in wins (2), and tied for first in shutouts (1).
• On Monday, Nov. 23, Mareks Mitens was named WCHA Goaltender of the Week for his play in the Lakers series against Michigan Tech on Nov. 21 and Nov. 22. Mitens stopped 41 of the 42 shots he faced from the Huskies and recorded his sixth career shutout in the team's 0-0 tie on Nov. 21. The senior goalie finished the weekend with a 0.57 goals against average and a .976 save percentage.

• Three players have appeared in 100 or more games in a Laker uniform. Senior forward Hampus Eriksson holds the lead among active players with 118 career games played, while senior defensemen Will Riedell (117 games played) and Lukas Kaelble (112 games played) follow close behind.

• The Lakers non-conference schedule includes the six games played during the November/December portion of the season and the first two series scheduled for January. The Lakers non-conference opponents are primarily WCHA teams as a result of the COVID-19 scheduling system and the two Alaska schools opting out of the '20-21 season. Lake State opened the season with a home series on Saturday, Nov. 21 and Sunday, Nov. 22 against the Michigan Tech Huskies.
• LSSU also played Adrian College and Alabama Huntsville in non-conference competition this season.
• The Jan. 2-3 and Jan. 8-9 series against Bemidji State and Northern Michigan will also be counted as non-conference games. The Lakers were previously scheduled to play Alaska and Alaska Anchorage on those weekends.

• Whitten has led the Lakers to a 4-2-1 record in season openers and a 5-1-1 record in home openers at the Taffy Abel Arena. Including this year's home opener against Michigan Tech, which ended in a 0-0 tie, the Lakers have gone five straight years without a loss in their first game.

• Hampus Eriksson set career highs in goals (6), assists (18), and points (24) last season for the Lakers. In his junior campaign, Eriksson surpassed the 20 point plateau for the first time in his collegiate career.
• As a junior, Yuki Miura set new season highs in assists (12) and points (14) while tying his previous season high in goals (2) last season.
• Miroslav Mucha set career highs in goals (3), assists (5) and points (8) during his sophomore season.

• Sophomore Niko Esposito-Selivanov comes from a legendary Sault Ste. Marie hockey family as Hockey Hall of Famer, Phil Esposito is his maternal grandfather and Hockey Hall of Famer, Tony Esposito is his maternal uncle. Esposito-Selivanov's father is Alexander Selivanov who played eight seasons in the NHL and additional seasons in professional leagues in Russia and Europe.

• The hockey team led all Lake Superior State men's athletic teams during the 2020 fall semester with a cumulative grade point average of 3.457. The hockey team also led all Laker men's teams during the 2019-20 season with a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.484, which is an improvement from the previous year's 3.419 mark.
•10 student-athletes were named 2019-20 WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award recipients: Alex Ambrosio, Tyler Anderson, Ashton Calder, Ian Johnston, Yuki Miura, Miroslav Mucha, Jacob Nordqvist, Mitchell Oliver, Collin Saccoman and Pete Veillette. To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, conference-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters.
• 17 members of the hockey team were named to the WCHA All-Academic Team including nine returning players. To qualify for this honor, a student-athlete must have completed one year of eligibility and have a GPA of at least 3.0 for the previous two semesters.
• Four Lakers, including three returning student-athletes (Alex Ambrosio, Louis Boudon, Pete Veillette), were named American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Krampade All-American Scholars. To qualify, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.75 GPA during the fall semester and participated in at least 40% of their school's games.
rewind: the 2019-20 season
• The Lakers return to the ice following a seventh place finish in the WCHA standings during the 2019-20 season as the team posted a 14-23-4 overall record and an 11-14-4 record in conference play. LSSU qualified for the WCHA postseason for the second consecutive season and would fall to the second seeded Bemidji State in the first round of the playoffs.
• The Lakers clinched their spot in the playoffs on Feb. 15, 2020, following a win against the University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers. The game, which took place on Feb. 15, 2020, was the first regular season WCHA game that the Lakers will play in Canada and the first NCAA game to be played in Canada since 2012.
• The Lakers opened the 2019-20 season against some of the NCAA's stiffest competition with two games against No. 2 ranked Denver, followed by a pair of road games against the Michigan Wolverines as well as a road series against the No. 4/5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.The Lakers opened conference play with two wins against Ferris State on Nov. 1 and 2, and rotated through home and away WCHA series since, including an away series against No. 1 Minnesota State. In the month of December, five of the six games the Lakers played in were against ranked opponents.
• The Lakers season finished with five players among the top 33 scorers in the WCHA. The team's offense was evenly distributed as 24 players recorded at least a point, 9 players had 12 or more points, five players registered 24 or more points, and one player notched 35 points.
• 20 different players scored a goal for the Lakers during the 2019-20 season and the 14 game winning goals were scored by nine different players.
• On seven occasions last season, a Laker received WCHA Player of the Week accolades while two Lakers received WCHA Player of the Month honors.
• Senior captain Max Humitz received Second Team All-Conference honors while freshman Louis Boudon was named to the WCHA's All-Rookie Team.
• Humitz, who became the 51st Laker all-time to record 100 career points and the 22nd Laker all-time to reach 60 career goals, ended his time as a Laker with 111 points (64 goals, 47 assists) in 149 games. The forward ended his career at Lake State as the WCHA's No. 2 post-realignment goal-scorer with 64 goals.
• In addition, Humitz was named a Top 10 Finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, a nominee for the Hobey Baker Award, and was honored with the LSSU hockey team's Most Valuable Forward Award, Most Valuable Player Award, and the Soo Blueliner Award for the 2019-20 season.
• The remaining LSSU Hockey team award recipients were Chase Gamelin (Gay Blade Award), Louis Boudon (Outstanding Freshman Award), Yuki Miura (Jim Howie Unsung Hero Award), Brendan McKay (Most Improved Player Award), Roman Bengert (Scholar Athlete Award) and Lukas Kaelble (Most Valuable Defenseman Award).
• Junior goaltender Mareks Mitens played well in net for the Lakers in 2019-20, with an especially strong second half of the season.Mittens appeared in 39 games, making 38 starts and finished the season with a career-best 13 wins.
• Mitens ranked first among all WCHA goaltenders in games played and games started, and played more minutes (2291:59) than any other NCAA netminder in 2019-20. The Ventspils, Latvia native, who finished the season with 1,002 saves, was one of three NCAA goalies to make 1000 or more saves.
• The netminder finished the season in fifth place among WCHA goalies in save percentage (.911%) and seventh place among that same group in goals against average (2.57).
lakers in the pros
• Former Laker Buddy Robinson (2011-13) played in five games for the Calgary Flames last season as well as one playoff game during the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Robinson played 45 games for the Flames AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat, and posted 32 points (18G, 14A). Robinson signed a one-year, one-way contract with the Flames in October 2020.
• A number of former Lakers are currently on AHL contracts for the '20-21 season including Max Humitz, 2016-20 (Grand Rapids Griffins); Kevin Czuczman, 2011-14 (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins); Zach Trotman, 2009-12 (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins).
• A number of former Lakers are currently on ECHL contracts for the '20-21 season including Nathan Perkovich, 2006-09 (Jacksonville Icemen); Gage Torrel, 2015-18 (Greenville Swamp Rabbits); Collin Saccoman, 2016-20 (Rapid City Rush); Brayden Gelsinger, 2016-20 (Utah Grizzlies); Diego Cuglietta, 2015-19 (Utah Grizzlies).
• Sophomore defenseman Arvid Henrikson was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft in the Seventh Round (187th overall).
