Mareks Mitens is the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State hockey student-athlete Mareks Mitens has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week, as announced by the Lake Superior State athletic department on Tuesday, March 10. 

Mitens, a junior goaltender from Ventspils, Latvia, backstopped the Lakers in all three games of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Quarterfinal against No. 10 Bemidji State on March 6-8. The Laker goaltender, who played 177:46 minutes out of 180:00 in the trio of games, led the conference in total shots faced over the weekend with 118 as well as saves made with 111 total. In the first and third game, Mitens made 66 saves - with 33 stops in each game. In Saturday's 5-3 win, Mitens stopped a season high 45 saves to lead the Lakers to the postseason victory and his career-best 13th win of the season.

Mitens posted a 2.36 goals against average in the series and also recorded a .941 save percentage, which ranked second among all WCHA goaltenders in the Quarterfinals.

It is the third time in his career and the second time this season that Mitens has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week.
