Ashton Calder and Will Riedell Named WCHA Players of the Week

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Ashton Calder and Will Riedell have been named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Players of the Week, as announced by conference officials on Monday, Feb. 10. 

Calder earned WCHA Forward of the Week honors, and Riedell earned WCHA Defenseman of the Week honors for their roles in Lake Superior State's weekend split on the road to Michigan Tech. The Lakers opened the series with a 7-3 win and followed up with a 4-3 loss in overtime on Saturday night against the Huskies. 

WCHA FORWARD OF THE WEEK - Ashton Calder

Sophomore Ashton Calder led the Lakers to a 7-3 win and a 4-3 overtime loss to the Michigan Tech Huskies on the road this weekend with a pair of two-point efforts. In Friday's win, Calder scored a shorthanded goal for the Lakers second goal of the game and would add his second goal of the game, which would stand as the game winning goal. It marked the third time that Calder has scored two goals in a game in his career. On Saturday night, the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. native opened the scoring for the Lakers with his ninth goal of the season and would add his fourth point of the weekend as he added the primary assist on the game tying goal with :45 seconds left in regulation. Calder has nine points in his last seven games played, including four multi-point games. The sophomore forward currently is riding a three-game point streak as he has posted a trio of two-point games in that span (4G, 2A). 

WCHA DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK - Will Riedell 

Junior Will Riedell led the Lakers to a 7-3 win and a 4-3 overtime loss to the Michigan Tech Huskies on the road this weekend with a team-leading four assists. In Friday's win, Riedell notched three assists which included the game winning goal. All of Riedell's points were primary helpers and led the junior to  set a new career high in single game points. The Greensboro, N.C. native wrapped up his four point weekend with an assist on the Lakers first goal on Saturday, which was his 100th career game as a Laker. Riedell was tied for the league lead in points this weekend with four and led all WCHA defensemen in points. The defenseman led the conference in assists. Riedell has now set a new career in assists with nine this season and tied his previous season high in points (11). 

This is the second time this season that Calder has been named WCHA Forward of the Week as he also received the honor on Nov. 4. In his rookie season in 2018-19, Calder earned WCHA Rookie of the Month honors twice as well as WCHA Rookie of the Week twice. 

This is the first time in Riedell's career that he has been awarded WCHA Defenseman of the Week honors. 

The Lakers will return to Sault Ste. Marie for a series against the University of Alabama Huntsville that will be played at two different arenas in two different countries. Friday's game is set for a 7:07 p.m. start at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. while Saturday's game will be played at the GFL Memorial Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario at 7:07 p.m.
