SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State hockey student-athlete Max Humitz has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week, as announced by the Lake Superior State athletic department on Tuesday, Jan. 7. 

Humitz, a senior forward from Livonia, Mich., led the Lakers to a weekend split against the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in a road series on Jan. 4 and 5. The Lakers captain recorded a three point game on Sunday as he scored two goals and an assist in the conference matchup. Humitz scored his first goal of the game while on the power play and would seal the Lakers win when he netted an empty net goal. Humitz would also add an assist on the game winning goal to finish the game with three points (2G, 1A) which ties his career game-high in both goals and points. The Lakers forward would record his record his first three point game of the season, and his first three point effort since Jan. 11, 2019. 

The Kinesiology major  leads the Lakers with 14 goals and 21 points this season, and is approaching his 100th career point as he currently sits at 97. Humitz ranks second among all WCHA players in goals, is tied for third among all NCAA players in goals and leads all NCAA players in shots on goal this season with 99.

It is the second time that Humitz has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week in his career.

The Lakers will look to build onto their Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) win total in Alaska this weekend as the team heads to Fairbanks to take on the Nanooks for a second straight weekend of play in the state. The series opens on Friday, Jan. 10 at 11:00 p.m. EST and concludes on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11:00 p.m. EST.
