Nordqvist Named WCHA Rookie of the Month

Jacob Nordqvist is the WCHA Rookie of the Month for March.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Jacob Nordqvist has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Month for March, as announced by conference officials on Tuesday. 

Nordqvist, a freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden who is a general studies major, led all WCHA rookies with nine blocked shots, while tallying the second-most assists (3), tying for second in plus-minus (+2), tying for third in points (3) and tying for fourth in power-play points (1) to help Lake Superior State (23-13-2, 16-10-2 WCHA) to a 3-3 record in the month of March.

Lake Superior State was 2-0 when Nordqvist recorded a point and 3-0 when he recorded a +1 rating in the month. Nordqvist recorded an assist in the Lakers' 5-2 win over Ferris State on March 1 and he tallied two assists, including an assist on the game-winning goal, in the Lakers' 3-1 series-clinching win over Bemidji State on March 9 as Lake Superior State swept Bemidji State in the WCHA Quarterfinals for its first-ever WCHA Playoffs series victory.

It is the second time that Nordqvist has been named WCHA Rookie of the Month. He previously earned the honor for the month of November.

With the award, the Lakers have won six WCHA Player of the Month awards during the 2018-19 season.    

This season, the Lakers (23-13-2) won their most games in a season since 1995-96, recorded the longest winning streak since 1996-97 (seven games), swept Ferris State in a road series for the first time since 1993-94, swept Michigan Tech in a series for the first time since 1983-84, won 16 WCHA Player of Week and six WCHA Player of the Month awards, had two Hobey Baker Award nominees, claimed the first Great Lakes Invitational Championship in program history and captured their first-ever WCHA Playoffs series win.
