Calder Named WCHA Rookie of the Month for February

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – For the second consecutive month, Ashton Calder has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Month, as announced by conference officials on Thursday. 

Calder (4-15--19), a freshman forward from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan who is majoring in finance and economics, garnered three goals, four assists, seven points and a +3 rating to help Lake Superior State to a 4-2-0 record in February.

Calder ranked in the top five in 10 statistical categories among WCHA freshmen during February, including being at the top of four statistical categories. He led all WCHA freshmen in points, assists, assists per game (0.67) and points per game (1.17), while ranking second in goals per shot on goal (.250), tied for second in goals (3), tied for second in goals per game (0.50), tied for second in power-play goals (2), tied for third in plus-minus (+3), and fourth in power-play points (2). Nationally amongst freshman, he ranked tied for third in points per game, tied for eighth in points, and tied for sixth in power-play goals.

Calder had three multi-point games during the month. He recorded a career-high two goals and one assist – on the game-winning goal – for a career-high three points in a 6-3 win at Ferris State on Feb. 1. He also tallied two assists at Northern Michigan on Feb. 22 and one goal, and one assist, at Northern Michigan on Feb. 23. 

Calder was named WCHA Rookie of the Week after tallying one goal and three assists with a +3 rating in the Lakers' two-game series at Northern Michigan on Feb. 22-23. He tied his career best in plus-minus with a +3 rating at Northern Michigan on Feb. 23.

With his performance on the month, Calder jumped up from a tie for sixth (1-11--12) in the WCHA freshman point rankings at the beginning of the month to a tie for second (4-15--19) entering March.

In addition to his offensive contributions, Calder also blocked three shots during February.

This is the second WCHA Monthly honor of Calder's career. He was previously named WCHA Rookie of the Month for January

This award is the Lakers' fifth WCHA monthly award this season.

The Lakers host Ferris State in a two-game WCHA series on Friday and Saturday night. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
