McKay Named Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week

Brendan McKay is the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State hockey student-athlete Brendan McKay has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week, as announced by the Lake Superior State athletic department on Monday.

McKay, a junior center from Toronto, Ontario who is majoring in finance and economics, tallied one goal and tied for the team lead with two assists to lead No. 20 Lake Superior State (16-8-2, 11-7-2-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) in points (3) as the Lakers split their weekend series with Bemidji State. In Friday's 5-2 win, McKay tallied a shorthanded goal, one assist, two points and a +2 rating. On Saturday, he recorded an assist on the Lakers' third goal of the game. McKay won 17 faceoffs, and tallied five shots on goal and two blocked shots in the series. He tied for third in the WCHA in points and second in assists on the week. 

This is the first time that McKay has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week

Lake Superior State continues WCHA play with a two-game series at Ferris State this weekend.

The Lakers are back at Taffy Abel Arena on Feb. 15-16 when they will be facing WCHA foe Michigan Tech. The 11th annual Check.Slash.Survive game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16 when the Lakers face off against the Huskies at 7 p.m. Check.Slash.Survive, the revamped "Pink in the Rink" fundraiser, focuses on raising funds for local organizations that help battle all types of cancer. For this year's Check.Slash.Survive game, the Check.Slash.Survive committee voted to place an emphasis on drawing awareness to childhood cancer.
