Laker Men's and Women's Golf Compete at Blue Devil Classic

WEST BRANCH, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's and women's golf teams competed at the 2023 Lawrence Tech Blue Devil Classic in which the men's team finished in a tie for seventh place while the women placed third overall on Monday and Tuesday. The first day of competition was played on the Nightmare Golf Course with the second day taking place on the Dream. 

Men

Freshman Jackson Theiler (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the way for the Lakers with a three-round total of 239 (82/78/79) to place 19th overall on the individual leaderboard, and Charley Stephen (Oshawa, Ont.) was able to shake off a first round that required 91 strokes before consistently utilizing only 78 in the following two. Yongbo Guan (Qingdao, China) would then finish with a three round total of 256 (81/84/91), and Charles Johnson (Green Bay, Wis.) was only one stroke behind his teammate with 257 (87/86/84) after improving on each round. Collin Pajot (Brighton, Mich.) rounded out the lineup for the Lakers with a total of 263 strokes (96/80/87), but he was able to put together the top improvement between rounds with a 16-stroke difference between the first and second set of 18 holes. 

Women

True freshman Kiera Cotter (Etobicoke, Ont.) had a strong showing at the Blue Devil Classic, notching the best individual round among all competitors after completing the third round only four strokes over par. Her three-round total of 247 (89/82/76) resulted in the first medal of her career with a second place finish on the individual leaderboard. Meanwhile, Marie Mathieu (Marshall, Mich.) would also finish in the top-ten individually with a three-round total of 265 (91/90/84). Jesse Hellebuyck (Almont, Mich.) narrowly missed the top-ten, but she was able to stay right behind Mathieu with a three round total of 267 (97/88/82) after improving each round on her way to placing 12th overall. Freshmen Mackenzie Davidson (Rockford, Mich.) and Natalie Kellogg (Montague, Mich.) rounded out the lineup for the Lakers with respective totals of 281 (100/91/90) and 287 (99/96/92) with both placing in the top-20 among all competitors. 

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Oct. 13 when they travel downstate for the Davenport Panther Invite.
