NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - Steady rain and slow play provided Lake Superior State men's golf with an uphill battle on Monday (April 11) at the Midwest Regional No. 4 at Purgatory Golf Club.
The Lakers, tied for 25th with Wisconsin-Parkside and Alderson Broaddus University after shooting a combined 325 in the first round, teamed together another effort of 325 with their bottom three golfers all improving their scores. The two-day total of 650, a single stroke behind Alderson Broaddus (649), dropped the Lakers to a 27th place finish.
Joe Ericson and Jason Kerr each took a step back on Monday after delivering top-50 individual performances during Sunday's opening round. Ericson was tied for 15th after a first round 75 (+3) had him within striking distance of Sunday's individual leader, Malone's Jake Troyer (70), but the junior added two strokes to him round and finished tied for 21st among the 150 golfers. Kerr dropped from a tie for 36th after posting a first round 77, to an 83 in Round 2 to finish tied for 83rd.
Rounding out LSSU lineup, the Lakers received improved performances from their third, fourth and fifth positions on Monday. Gavin MacIver shaved five strokes off of Sunday's 84 to deliver a second round 79 that moved him into a tie for 100th place. Matt Meharg's 86 on Monday was a three-stroke improvement over his 89 on Sunday to finish tied for 138th. Completing the Lakers' quintuplet, Kellan Korab improved by four strokes to deliver a two day total of 91-87--178.
Northwood's Matt Garland improved from a tie for 3rd place after Round 1 to delivering a tournament-best 68 on Monday to claim the individual medal with a combined 73-68--141. Along with Garland, the Timberwolves also rode a pair of individuals tying for 15th, Paul Ostby 74-77--151 and Kory Roberts 75-76--151, to claim the overall team victory with a combined 299-301--600.
Up next, the Lakers will compete at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship, held April 15-17 at the Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
