
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - Men's golfer Joe Ericson shot an opening round 75 (+3) to lead Lake Superior State and tie for 15th among the 150 individuals on Sunday (April 10) at the Midwest Regional No. 4, held at Purgatory Golf Club.
Ericson, a junior, also tied for the most birdies during the opening round with four and is tied for the lead in Par 3 scoring at -2.
The Lakers combined for a score of 325 and are tied with Wisconsin-Parkside and Alderson Broaddus University for 25th among the 30 teams competing in the two-day event. Bellarmine leads all teams with a combined stroke count of 298 and a pair of individuals tying for third overall. Malone's Jake Troyer shot a two-under par (70) to capture a two-stroke lead after the first round.
Sunday's opening round featured tough conditions with the temperature ranging in the 40's and 50's with high winds and overcast skies. Later groups to tee-off also battled rain in the late afternoon.
Sophomore Jason Kerr finished seven strokes behind the leader to tie for 36th overall with an opening round 77. Gavin MacIver produced the third-best score for the Lakers with an 84 to tie for 119th overall. Matt Meharg shot and 89 to tie for 142nd and Kellan Korab is tied for 144th with a 91 to round out the group score.
The second round is slated to begin at 8 a.m. Monday morning with 20 groups teeing off in nine-minute intervals. A second wave of 30 groups will tee-off at 12 p.m. The forecast calls for more rain on Monday.
