GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball team (19-6, 11-4 GLIAC) pulled away in the second half for their seventh win in a row by a final score of 73-56 over the Davenport Panthers (9-16, 4-11 GLIAC) on Thursday.
Both teams were letting it fly early with the first five baskets of the game coming from three-point range, including a pair from Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.). The Panthers were able to take a six point lead, but the Lakers stormed back with Adam Harakow (Edmondton, Alta.) quickly pushing the ball ahead to Omar Suleiman (Canton, Mich.) who fired from the wing while being fouled for the four-point play to give his team their first lead of the night at 19-18. Edmondson would then hit back-to-back threes as the Lakers pushed ahead with a five point lead. Davenport countered with a 6-0 run, but the Lakers closed out the opening half with five straight points of their own to go into the halftime break leading 36-32.
Both teams battled through the first four minutes of the second half, going back and forth as each side tacked on 11 points during the stretch, but after the under-16 media timeout, the Lakers came out in force, using an 18-2 scoring run to storm ahead and break the game open. LSSU would then begin to slow the game down, and they used their defense to close out the victory.
Edmondson led the Lakers in scoring with 13 points, and Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Okerlund also finished the night in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Meanwhile, Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) led the team in rebounding with 8 boards.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 24 when they face the Grand Valley State Lakers with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
