Womack's Game-Winner Completes Laker Comeback Over Warriors

Womack's Game-Winner Completes Laker Comeback Over Warriors

DETROIT, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball pro-gram (13-6, 5-4 GLIAC) earned a tough win on the road over the Wayne State Warriors (8-10, 2-7 GLIAC) by a final score of 64-62 after Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) drove in for the game-winning layup while being fouled with three seconds remaining in the game.

Both teams battled early on with threes from Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) and Omar Suleiman (Canton, Mich.) tying up the score at 8-8. The Warriors were able to push ahead, but after a pair of buckets from Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and another three from Okerlund, the Lakers found themselves right back within one. However, Wayne State held on to a two-point advantage going into the halftime break.

Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) came out swinging to start the second half with nine points on three shots from distance, and after missing on his fourth attempt of the half, he secured his own rebound to help set up Perkins for the second chance basket, knotting up the score at 42-42. Then, Nino Carter-Smith (Warren, Mich.) stole the ball away and drove in for a tough and-one opportunity to take the lead. The Warriors were able to go back out in front, leading by as many as nine points, but the Lakers had one final push left in them, erupting for an 11-0 run that was capped off by a go-ahead three from Okerlund with 40 seconds left on the clock. Wayne State was able to tie up the score on the other end, but after a timeout to talk things over with seven seconds to go, LSSU found themselves with an opportunity to put the game away. Then, Womack found the open lane to the basket, spun off of the defender, and hit what would go down as a game-winning reverse layup while being fouled with 3.1 seconds left in the game.

Edmondson led the way offensively with 19 points. Meanwhile, Perkins finished with 15 points while also being one rebound shy of a double-double, and Okerlund also scored in double-figures with 14.

The Lakers return to action on Thursday, Feb. 1 when they host the Michigan Tech Huskies in Bud Cooper Gymnasium with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
