MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball program (9-5, 1-3 GLIAC) fell at the buzzer to the Northern Michigan (NMU) Wildcats by a final score of 72-71 on Thursday.
Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) got the Lakers on the board first, hitting from distance for a three, and a three from Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) gave his team a 10-4 lead. Both teams would then go back and forth throughout the half, trading the lead on six occasions with neither side able to take control, but it was the Lakers that went into the halftime break with a three-point advantage, 35-32.
The Lakers came out swinging to open up the second half with a 7-0 run behind an Edmondson three and a pair of baskets in the paint from Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.). The Wildcats fought back, but LSSU was able to hold them back and push back ahead with three-consecutive threes from Edmondson. However, NMU managed to come back to tie the game at 70-70.
After running down the clock, the Lakers were able to get to the free throw line to retake the lead with three seconds to play, but it was Max Weisbrod who would have the final say, sinking a shot at the buzzer to break the hearts of the Laker faithful.
Despite the loss, Edmondson led the way offensively with 19 points while Perkins was not far behind with 18 points of his own.
The Lakers will look to bounce back when they take on the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday, Jan. 13 with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
