Laker Men's Basketball Fall in Final Moments to #15 Bulldogs

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball program (9-4, 1-2 GLIAC) narrowly fell to the #15 Ferris State Bulldogs (12-2, 2-1 GLIAC) by a final score of 90-86 on Saturday.

The Lakers were able to hit the ground running as early threes from Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) gave LSSU an 8-3 lead. Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) would then get in on the action with a three of his own to kick off an 8-0 Laker run to extend the lead to double-digits. The Bulldogs would keep fighting, getting back to within three, but Okerlund was there with the answer to keep a firm grasp of the momentum. Edmondson would then splash one more in from beyond the arc at the end of the opening half to close out an impressive start for the Lakers who went into the locker room leading 47-36 after shooting 69 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of action.

Ferris State was able to come out of the break hot, quickly coming back to within one. The game would then go back and forth for the remainder of the contest with both teams always seeming to have an answer for one another, including a three from Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) to prevent the Bulldogs from pulling ahead. However, Ferris State was able to take the lead in the final minute and close out the game at the free throw line after a key stop on defense.

Despite the loss, all five of the Lakers' starters finished the game in double-digit scoring, led by Okerlund with 21. Womack and Edmondson each finished with 16 points with the latter also dishing out a game-high six assists. Meanwhile, Soper ended the night with 13 points and Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) notched ten points while also securing a team-high eight rebounds.

The Lakers will look to bounce back on Thursday, Jan. 11 when they travel to take on Upper Peninsula rival Northern Michigan with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
