Lakers' Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short Against Lewis

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball team (8-3, 1-1 GLIAC) fell in the closing moments to the visiting Lewis Flyers (6-5) by a final score of 83-78 on Saturday.

The Flyers opened up the scoring with a pair of baskets, but Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) closed the gap with a three. However, Lewis was able to pull ahead with a 21-5 run. The Lakers fought back as a Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) three-pointer got his team back within ten. Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) would then convert a strong and-one opportunity to start to swing the momentum, and his teammates with Omar Suleiman (Canton, Mich.), Andy Soma (Traverse City, Mich.) and Blake Cassidy (Pellston, Mich.) all hitting from beyond the arc to cut the lead to six going into the halftime break.

Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) wasted no time, cutting the lead in half with a three-ball less than 15 seconds into the second half, and he would then draw a foul and convert from the line to get all the way back to within one. Then, after a bucket from Perkins, Edmondson was able to get to the charity stripe to give the Lakers their first lead of the night. The Flyers managed to push back ahead for a double-digit lead, but the Lakers were not ready to give up yet as they clawed their way all the way back to within one. However, LSSU's attempt to tie the game fell just short, and the Flyers were able to close out the game from the free throw line.

Perkins led the way offensively for the Lakers with 17 points while also dishing out five assists and grabbing four rebounds. Meanwhile, Edmondson and Okerlund were not far behind with each of them scoring 16 points of their own.

The Lakers will look to bounce back on Tuesday, Jan. 2 when they host the Kuyper Cougars to open up the new year.
