Laker Men's Basketball Storm Past Algoma 100-42

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball team (6-2, 1-1 GLIAC) led from wire to wire on their way to a 100-42 victory over the visiting Algoma Thunderbirds (1-10) in their home opener on Thursday.

Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) opened up the scoring for the Lakers with a three ball, and Okerlund would follow that up with another three to kickstart a 8-0 Laker run to help give his team a double-digit lead. The Lakers would continue to press the attack as threes from Blake Cassidy (Pellston, Mich.) and Adam Harakow (Edmonton, Alta.) followed by a Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and-one extended the lead to 18 as LSSU went into the locker room leading 41-23.

The Lakers came out hot to start the second half with a 12-2 run that featured threes from Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) and Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.), and LSSU would keep pressing ahead as back-to-back threes from Andy Soma blossomed the lead to a 30-point advantage before Drew Hess (Oscoda, Mich.) capped off the run at 11-0. Hess would continue to let it fly with two more threes, and Omar Suleiman (Canton, Mich.) hit back-to-back threes of his own to help wrap up a dominant 100-42 victory over the Thunderbirds.

Four different Lakers finished the night having scored double-figures, and 12 different Lakers were able to put points on the scoreboard, led by Perkins with 14. Perkins would also finish leading all players in rebounding with eight in 22 minutes of action. Meanwhile, Harakow led all players in assists with 10. 

The Lakers will now turn their attention to the Justagame Classic in Wisconsin Dells where they will first take on Southwest Minnesota State on Monday, Dec. 18 with tipoff scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
