Preview: LSSU Men's Basketball Set to Host GVSU in GLIAC Quarterfinals

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball program (13-13, 12-6 GLIAC) is set to host the Grand Valley State (GVSU) Lakers (17-11, 11-7) for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Quarterfinals in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Wednesday, March 1 at 6 p.m.

LSSU came away victorious in both previous encounters between the two Laker programs, including a victory on Thursday, Feb. 23 to secure home court advantage in the opening round via a head-to-head tiebreaker. GVSU gave Lake State all they could handle in the first meeting on Dec. 3, including having a nine point advantage at the half and later forcing the game into overtime, but LSSU was able to weather the storm for the 79-75 victory in which Caden Ebeling (Shelby Twp., Mich.) led his team in scoring with 19 points while Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) was not far behind with 18 points of his own.

In their second encounter on the road in Allendale, Mich., LSSU got themselves off to a great start and closed the opening half with a 14-0 run to take a 44-22 lead into the break, but this time, it was Grand Valley that was able to push back in the second half. However, they were unsuccessful in doing so as the deficit proved to be too much to overcome in what ultimately resulted in Lake Superior State holding on for the win by a final score of 65-57 for a sweep of the regular season series and picking up their first victory in Allendale since 2015.

Tickets are on sale now for $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for children, and free for students with a valid ID.
