Men's Basktball Heads to SVSU For GLIAC Tilt

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.— The No.24-ranked Lake Superior State men's basketball team will continue Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference play Thursday evening (8 p.m.) as it travels to Saginaw Valley State for a matchup with the Cardinals.

The Lakers (7-1 overall, 2-0 in the GLIAC) are coming off a pair of home wins over Ashland (Nov.30) and Tiffin (Dec.2) over the weekend. SVSU is 2-6, 0-2, this season and fell to Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan on the road last weekend.

Lake Superior enters Thursday's tilt with the No.3 scoring offense and defense in the GLIAC posting an average of 81.3 points per game which and are allowing just 67.9 points. Saginaw Valley is averaging 70 points per game and allowing 79.8.

Senior guard Akaemji Williams paces the team and ranks No. 5 in the conference averaging 18 points per contest. Williams also leads the squad in assists with 6 per game.

Senior forward Michael Nicholson leads the league and ranks No.5 in the nation in field goal percentage (70.5) to go with his 13.1 points per game. Nicholson also leads the team and is fourth in the GLIAC with 8.1 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Josh Goldschmidt has been LSSU's top sharp shooter this season knocking down 45.5 percent of his three-point attempts and is averaging 9.4 points per contest.

Mike Wells Jr. and DJ Hoskins lead the Cardinals offensively averaging 11.3 and 11.2 points respectively.

After Thursday's matchup, the Lakers will head to Northwood as they continue league play against the Timberwolves (2-5, 0-2).

The Lakers return Home (Dec.16) as they host No.5 Ferris State (10-0) at 3 p.m. inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
