Lakers' Williams picks up All-GLIAC First Team and All-GLIAC Defensive Team honors

BAY CITY, Mich. - For the second consecutive season, Lake Superior State junior guard Akaemji Williams has been selected as a member of the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team, the league announced on Monday. Along with the All-GLIAC First Team honors, Williams also was selected to the All-GLIAC Defensive Team for the third straight time.

An All-GLIAC First Team winner last season as well, Williams has the Lakers to a 16-9 mark this season and a 13-8 record in conference play. The native of Pontiac, Mich., leads the team and ranks third in overall scoring among GLIAC players at 21.4 points per game and leads the conference with 7.8 assists. In GLIAC games this season, Williams ranks fourth with 21.2 points per game and leads the league with 7.4 assists per contest in helping the Lakers capture the No. 3 seed heading into the GLIAC Tournament.

An All-GLIAC Defensive Team honoree in each of his three seasons at LSSU, Williams also leads the league with 3.1 steals per game overall and 3.0 steals per game in conference play this season. The 5-8 point guard also averages 3.4 rebounds per contest.

Nationally, among NCAA Division II members, Williams ranks 31st in points per game, fifth in assists per game and is third in steals per game this season.

Three times this season Williams has been named the GLIAC Player of the Week for the North Division and earlier this season cracked the 1,000 career-point milestone in a win at Findlay. With 194 assists this season, a school record 208 assists last year and 91 assists as a freshman in 2014-15, Williams already ranks third in LSSU history with 493 assists.

The Lakers open play in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., hosting the No. 6-seed Ashland Eagles.
