Poor shooting dooms Lakers at Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. - Lake Superior State men's basketball suffered their third straight loss on the road Saturday against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division opponents Wayne State, 83-59, at the Matthaei Center in Detroit.

 The Lakers (10-7, 7-6 GLIAC) posted one of their lowest shooting performances from the field this season, hitting just 22-56 (39.3 percent) on field goals in the game. From three-point range, the Lakers hit just 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) and went cold in the second half, scoring on 2-of-12 shots from behind the arc.

The Warriors (11-6, 8-5 GLIAC) featured four starters in double digits, led by Chuck Key's team-leading 23 points and six rebounds. Marcus Moore followed up with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists for a solid all-around performance.

Moore tied Ronald Booth (17 points) for the team lead with three made three-point field goals and George Spencer hit 5-of-7 shots from the floor and 2-for-3 from behind the arc to round out the WSU starters reaching double figures in scoring with 14 points.

On the game, the Warriors shot 47.6 percent from the field and hit 52.9 percent (9-17) from deep.

After leading 32-26 at halftime, the Warriors boosted their hot shooting in the second half, hitting 56.7 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from behind the arc while smothering the Lakers with sound defense. LSSU also committed seven turnovers in the final 20 minutes while struggling to find their shot.

Junior guard Akaemji Williams scored 11 points in the second half to finish with a team-high 14 points and six assists. Sophomore Carson Manger was the only other Laker to reach double digits with 12 points and tied for a team-high seven rebounds with freshman Ke'Montrece Collins, who also provided six points in 22 minutes of reserve duty.

The Lakers welcome a return home Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. ET to host GLIAC travel partners Northwood, beginning a three-game week at home. Later in the week, the Lakers also host Upper Peninsula rivals Northern Michigan on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and close the week with Michigan Tech at 3 p.m. next Saturday.
