BAY CITY, Mich. - Lake Superior State (LSSU) senior women's javelin thrower Jenna Fleming has been named a recipient of the 2024 Spring Commissioner's Award, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. In total, six male and six female GLIAC student-athletes that competed in a spring sport were honored.
Fleming completed what has amounted to a historic career for the LSSU track and field program. She is a three-time All-American honoree and won the GLIAC Championship in women's javelin in each of her four seasons with the team. This season, she was even able to break her own school record with a throw of 47.59m at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic, and throughout her career, she claimed 1st place in the women's javelin throw at 20 separate meets.
"Jenna has been a clear leader in the classroom and on the track for LSSU since day one," said LSSU track and field head coach Tony Filipek. "Her accomplishments, albeit great, pale in comparison to the person she is, and we are all so proud of her."
As impressive as Fleming's career has been at LSSU athletically, she has been just as outstanding academically as well with a cumulative GPA of 3.91. She was the 2024 recipient of the Debra McPherson Outstanding Female Athlete Award as the LSSU athletic department's top senior female student-athlete, and she was also honored with the Outstanding Kinesiology Sport and Fitness Management Award, the Outstanding Kinesiology Senior Award, and the American Kinesiology Association Outstanding Scholar Award representing LSSU. In addition, she has also served as the president of the Kinesiology Club on campus which has won the Student Government Club of the Year Award, and she sat on the Distinguished Teaching Award selection committee for 2023-24.
"The Kinesiology Department and Faculty would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation of [Fleming] receiving this award," said Dr. Joe Susi, Chair of the LSSU Kinesiology program. "Excelling both in the classroom and on the athletic field takes dedication, time management, and determination, and she has been driven from the onset of her education to excel in both areas while bringing a joyous smile and sense of humor to those she interacts with. Congratulations to Jenna for this well deserved honor."
In order to be nominated, student-athletes are required to have completed at least four semesters of full time enrollment at the institution, cannot be freshman or sophomore status, maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, and be a starter or key reserve.
