Laker Track and Field Place 3rd at Hillsdale Complex Opener

HILLSDALE, Mich. - Lake Superior State (LSSU) track and field program competed at the Hillsdale Complex Opener on Saturday. 

Jenna Fleming (Hilton Beach, Ont.) secured her third first place finish in the season in women's javelin with a distance of 41.63m. Meanwhile, Ava Donmyer (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) and Paige Johnson (Eckerman, Mich.) also threw for respective distances of 29.15m and 26.38m, most marks being new personal bests, and the trio combined to score 19 points for the Lakers in the event. 

Lindsey Tonello (Cadillac, Mich.) would then leap for a personal record distance of 5.02m in the long jump to place 3rd, scoring 6 more points for LSSU.

The 4x100m relay unit of Haley Howe (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Brooke Brazeau (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Keira Lamming (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), and Tonello placed second overall with a time of 52.40.

Lamming continued to put points on the board for her team in both hurdles races with a pair of fifth place finishes in both the 100m and 400m hurdles with her time of 17.46 in the 100m hurdles being a new personal record. Meanwhile, Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.) also scored points for her team in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:19.40.

Olivia Peter (Cass City, Mich.), Kapushinski, Nora Smoes (Reed City, Mich.), and Julie Sheehy (Walkerville, Mich.) all contributed points in the 1500m run, led by Peter who placed fifth with a time of 5:21.07.

Kara Mosher (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) would be the lone scorer for the Lakers in the 800m race with a time of 2:38.43, but Peter, Sheehy, and Smoes were all able to set new personal records in the event.

Sofia Salazar (Valle del Cauca, Columbia), Tonello, and Howe rounded out the day for the Lakers by each contributing points in the 400m dash with Howe's time of 1:04.29 being a new personal best.

Michael Sherman (Boyne City, Mich.) got things started for the LSSU men with a third place finish in the 400m dash.

Ryan O'Neill (Perry, Mich.), Roy Bowman (Jerome, Mich.), Ethan Meehle (Midland, Mich.), and Jacob Kochanski (Alpena, Mich.) would then all score points for their team in the 800-meter race.

Bowman, Meehle, Kochanski, and Derrian Kumfer (Romeo, Mich.) would then all score in the 1500-meter run, led by the senior Bowman who finished second overall with a time of 4:28.18.

Avery Timm (Petoskey, Mich.) would then hurdle his way to a third place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.59, and a time of 10:58.15 in the 3000-meter steeplechase from Skylar Williams (Battle Creek, Mich.) was good enough to place 3rd in the event, tacking on 6 more points for LSSU.

Both relay units for the Laker men placed second in their respective events with the unit of Riley Traver (Hartford, Mich.), Timm, Noah Murray (Macomb, Mich.), and Sherman finishing the 4x100m relay with a time of 44.85 and the team of Sherman, Timm, O'Neill, and Bowman completing the 4x400m relay in 3:42.53.

Timm scored in both the long jump and the triple jump, with respective distances of 6.17 and 11.52m while Murray placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 11.99m.

In the men's throwing events, Ryan Reiniche (Hillsdale, Mich.) scored in both events that he competed in while back in his hometown, placing fourth in the shot put (14.83m) and fifth in the discus throw (39.25m). Meanwhile, Trey Nieman (Morenci, Mich.) was the final scorer on the day for LSSU with a distance of 35.55m in the men's javelin throw.
