Laker Track and Field Earn 15 Top-Eight Finishes and 17 Personal Records at Davenport Tune-Up

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University (LSSU) track and field program competed at the Davenport Tune-Up on Friday and Saturday, and they would go on to earn 17 new personal records and 15 top-eight placements.

Junior thrower Jenna Fleming (Hilton Beach, Ont.) highlighted the day for the Lakers with another first place finish in the javelin throw with a distance of 39.52m. 

Kennedy Konkle (Oxford, Mich.) continued the strong day for the throwers with a pair of new personal bests in the shot put (8.14m) and discus (31.95m) while fellow freshman Janelle Docter (Howard City, Mich.) secured a personal record of her own with a distance of 32.61m in the discus throw.

Meanwhile, Ryan Reiniche (Hillsdale, Mich.) came away with 3rd and 4th place finishes in the shot put (15.31m) and discus (42.53m) throws, respectively. John Kulhanek (Owosso, Mich.) and Jared Christensen (Orleans, Mich.) would also throw for new personal records in the discus throw while Trey Nieman (Morenci, Mich.) and Timothy Howes (Hartland, Mich.) secured personal bests of their own in the javelin throw.

Freshman Avery Timm (Petoskey, Mich.), who was recently named the 2023 Male Terry McDermott Award winner as LSSU's top male newcomer, had a solid outing in the field, setting three new personal records and finishing no worse than ninth in the high jump (6th, 1.76m), long jump (9th, 5.86m), and triple jump (7th 11.77m), and Riley Traver cleared 1.76m in the high jump to secure a 6th place finish.

Andrew Giddens (Cadillac, Mich.) would go on to have an impressive day on the track. He set a new personal record in the 100-meter dash (11.54), placed within the top-eight in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles (15.34 and 1:00.02 respectively), and anchored a pair of top-five finishes in the 4x100 (43.18) and 4x400-meter (3:43.25) relays.

Breanyl Baker (St. Catherine, Jamaica) placed 8th in the 100-meter dash (13.03), and she would then team up with Lindsey Tonello (Cadillac, Mich.), Sofia Salazar (Valle del Cauca, Columbia), and Jayda Williams (Claxton Bay, Trinidad) for a 7th place finish in the 4x100-meter relay (51.62).

Salazar and Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.) each set new personal bests in the 200-meter (28.48) and 800-meter (2:32.74) runs, respectively. 

In the 200-meter race, Blake Dunning (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) ran for a personal best time of 23.19, and Michael Sherman (Boyne City, Mich.) placed sixth in the 400-meter race with a personal record time of 50.60.

Aaron Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) set a new personal record in the 800-meter race (2:01.62), and both Ethan Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) and Reese Camp (Highland, Mich.) set personal bests in the 1500-meter run with respective times of 4:24.74 and 4:32.34.
