Laker Track and Field Earn Several Personal Best Performances at SVSU Jet's Pizza Invitational

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University track and field program competed at the Saginaw Valley State Jet's Pizza Invitational.

Andrew Giddens (Cadillac, Mich.) went on to have another impressive outing, finishing fourth in the men's heptathlon after setting the meet record in the 60-meter hurdle section, winning it with a time of 8.7 seconds. Giddens also came away with a sixth place finish in the standard 60-meter hurdles before teaming up with Michael Sherman (Boyne City, Mich.), Ryan O'Neill (Perry, Mich.), and Avery Timm (Petosky, Mich.) to finish fifth in the 4x400-meter relay.

Noah Murray (Macomb, Mich.) also competed in the men's heptathlon, his first appearance in the event, in which he placed sixth while setting three personal bests (60-meter, shot put, and 1000-meter) in the process.

The Lakers were able to earn a fourth place finish in the men's distance medley relay after Sherman, O'Neill, Aaron Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) and Roy Bowman (Jerome, Mich.) combined for a time of 11:11.9.

Riley Traver (Hartford, Mich.) earned a third place finish in the men's high jump after clearing 1.78 meters, and he placed fifth in the triple jump after clearing a personal best distance of 11.73 meters.

Jayda Williams (Claxton Bay, Trinidad) had a strong showing in the women's long jump with a second place finish with a distance of 5.12 meters.

Blake Dunning (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) earned a personal best in the men's 60-meter dash while Eric Somsky (Fenton, Mich.) also ran for personal best times of 25.16 and 2:13.63 in the 200 and 800-meter races, respectively.

Nachazel, Bowman, and Riley Sponseller (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) ran for a personal record times of 4:34.28, 4:45.65, and 4:59.69, respectively, in the mile.

Reese Camp (Highland, Mich.) earned a personal record of 17:09.17 in the 5000-meter race while Timm had a pair of personal best performances in the 60-meter hurdles (9.14) and the long jump (5.90).

Sofia Salazar (Valle del Cauca, Columbia) earned a pair of personal records in both the 200-meter (28.56) and 400-meter (1:03.59) races. 

Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.) came away with personal bests in the 800-meter race (2:37.19) and the mile (5:40.25), and both Kate Baker (Northville, Mich.) and Katelyn Moore (Grayling, Mich.) also earned personal records in the same two events.

Gwen Phillips (Cadillac, Mich.) secured a personal best time of 22:06.82 in the 5000-meter race.

Meanwhile, all five throwers on the women's side earned a personal best in at least one of either the shot put and weight throw events with Alyssa Bonanno (Flat Rock, Mich.), Janelle Docter (Howard City, Mich.), and Paige Johnson (Eckerman, Mich.) picking up a personal record in both.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 when they travel for the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Mich.
