Preview: Track & Field Set to Take Stage at GLIAC Championships

Sault Ste. Marie, MI - The men's and women's track and field teams will travel downstate to Allendale, Michigan, one last time as a team for the GLIAC Outdoor championships. For many of them, this will be their final opportunity to compete as collegiate athletes. The Lakers look to close out the season well represented by both teams, as 16 women and 12 men will compete.

On Thursday, the field events will begin at 2:30 P.M. with the men's hammer throw, which Timothy Howes will compete in. Noah Murray will also start his day in the men's pole vault at 2:30 P.M., as well as Riley Nichols in the men's long jump. Jenna Fleming will look to repeat as GLIAC champion in the women's javelin at 3:00 P.M., joined by senior Bethany Wilson. Seniors Brittney Ryan and Maddison Gould will take part in the women's hammer throw later that afternoon. Riley Traver will start his championships in the men's high jump, slated to start at 5:00 P.M; Jayda Williams and Breanyl Baker will both take part in the women's long jump at 5:30 P.M. 

The preliminary running events Thursday will start at 2:30 P.M. as well, beginning with the women's and men's 4x100m relay. The women's relay will be made up of Kara Mosher, Jayda Williams, Breanyl Baker, and Sofia Salazar; the men's relay team will consist of Nichols, Andrew Giddens, Murray, and Michael Sherman.  The women's 1500m run will start at 2:45 P.M. with Leah Bell and freshmen Kate Baker & Gwen Phillips competing for the Lakers.  Roy Bowman will be the sole men's Laker in the men's 1500m run. Andrew Giddens will vy for a spot in the finals in the 110m high hurdles at 3:40 P.M.  The women's 400m run prelims is set to start at 3:55 P.M., which will be run by Mosher, Salazar, and Sydney Kapushinski. Sherman will run in the men's 400m run at 4:10 P.M. Beginning at 4:55 P.M. the women's 800m run will be run by freshmen Katelyn Moore and Olivia Stevens. Ryan O'Neill will run in the men's 800m following the women. Giddens will look for another spot in the finals for the 400m hurdles at 5:50 P.M. Breanyl Baker will run in the 200m prelims at 6:10 P.M. At 7:00 P.M., senior David Mitter will run his final race as a Laker in the 3,000m steeplechase, looking to take yet another school record in the event. 8:00 P.M. will mark the start of the men's 10,000m run, of which both senior Kendal Delpiere and Ethan Nachazel will be running.

On Friday, the field events will begin at 11:00 A.M. with the men's shot put. Ryan Reiniche will compete in this event, and he will later be joined in the discus throw with Timothy Howes at 1:00 P.M. The start of women's discus will also take place at 11:00 A.M., of which seniors Bethany Wilson and Brittney Ryan will take part. Murray and Traver will compete in the men's triple jump at 11:00 A.M. At 1:00 P.M. Ryan and Gould will take part in the women's shot put and Jayda Williams will take part in the women's triple jump.

Following a 12:05 P.M. National Anthem, the finals for the rest of the running events will begin, starting with the finals for the 4x100m relay teams. Pending the qualification of various individuals to the finals of the running events, many Lakers will compete Friday on the track. Josie Morrow will compete in the 5000m run at 2:00 P.M. Shortly thereafter, the women will compete in the 4x400m relay, with a team consisting of Salazar, Kapushinski, Mosher, and Sarah Votruba. The men will follow, with a team of Sherman, O'Neill, Bowman, and Giddens. This will conclude the 2022 GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field CHampionships, as well as the season for many Lakers.
