David Mitter Named GLIAC Male Track Athlete of the Week

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State senior distance runner David Mitter has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by conference officials on Monday, April 11.

Lake Superior State senior distance runner David Mitter placed first in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase event at Oakland University's Golden Grizzlies Invite on Friday, April 8. Mitter recorded a time of 9:22.69 in his first time competing collegiately in the event and currently holds the second best time in the GLIAC this season. The Howell, Mich. native won the race by nearly 15 seconds.

"David had the idea of trying the steeplechase for the first time and we went with it," said Track & Field Head Coach Tony Filipek. "In his debut he absolutely knocked it out of the park and displayed his amazing range!  He is great at everything he does from the steeplechase to his engineering work in the classroom and is excited to finish off his illustrious track career on a high note!  We are honored he received athlete of the week honors."

It marks the second GLIAC athlete of the week accolade for Mitter in his career. Mitter was named GLIAC Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week in September 2019.

The Lakers will return to competition next Friday, April 15 as the team is set to compete in the Bucknell Bison Classic next Friday, April 15 in Lewisburg, Penn.
