Laker Track & Field Slated to Open Spring Season at MSU's Spartan Invitational

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams will open the 2022 outdoor season this weekend as the team competes at Michigan State's Auto Owners Spartan Invitational on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2. The two-day competition will be held at the Jenison Field House and the Ralph Young Track and Field Facility in East Lansing, Mich. 

Friday's Events

Friday's events are set to begin at 12:00 p.m. with the women's pole vault followed by the men's pole vault competition. The women's hammer throw, followed by the men's event will also start at noon. The Lakers will be represented by sophomore Noah Murray in the men's pole vault. In the hammer throw competition, Timothy Howes and Ryan Reiniche will compete for the Lakers men's team and Brittney Ryan will take part in the women's hammer throw event.

At 1:00 p.m., the triple jump competition will begin with the women's event starting first, followed by the men's event. Noah Murray will compete in his second event of the day for the Lakers as he will be the lone Laker competing in the triple jump. 

The final event on Friday is the javelin competition, which is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. Sophomore Jenna Fleming will be competing for the Lakers as she looks to have a strong start to her second collegiate season after an impressive freshman campaign last year. Fleming enters the Spartan Invitational with the highest seed mark among all participants (45.16 meters). 

Saturday's Events

The men's discus, followed by the women's event will open the schedule of events on Saturday at the Spartan Invitational. Ryan Reiniche and Timothy Howes will be competing for the Lakers in the men's discus event while Bethany Wilson, Brittney Ryan, Maddison Gould, and Jenna Fleming will take part in the women's discus event. 

The shot put will take place following the conclusion of the discus event. In the men's shot put event, Ryan Reiniche, Timothy Howes, and Kamuran Ramadanov will represent the Lakers. Brittney Ryan and Maddison Gould will partake in the women's shot put event. 

The final field events of the Spartan Invitational are the high jump and long jump which are both slated for noon starts. Riley Traver will represent the Lakers in the men's high jump competition. In the long jump event, Breanyl Baker will compete for the women's team while Noah Murray and Riley Nichols will participate in the men's event. 

The track events are set to open at 11:00 a.m with all events opening with the men's competition, followed by the women's races. The Lakers first running events will be the men's 4x100 meter relay at 1:35 p.m. and the women's 4x100 meter relay at 1:40 p.m.

At 1:50 p.m., the men's 1500 meter distance race will take place and will be well represented by the Lakers. David Mitter, Roy Bowman, Ethan Nachazel, Kendal Delpiere and Aaron Nachazel will all be running in the event for the Lakers. The women's 1500 meter run will also have a number of Lakers competing as Leah Bell, Josie Morrow, Olivia Stevents and Katelyn Moore will all be competing for LSSU. 

Andrew Giddens will look to have a strong showing in the 110 meter hurdles for the Lakers as he is slated to compete in the event at 2:25 p.m. 

The men's 400 meter race is set for a 2:45 p.m. start and will feature Michael Sherman for the Lakers. The women's 400 meter event will follow at 2:55 p.m. and includes freshman Kara Mosher for LSSU. 

At 3:05 p.m., the men's 100 meter dash will take place. Dwayne Thompson, Riley Traver, Riley Nichols, and Nikolas Curlett will compete for the Lakers in the men's event. Breanyl Baker and Jayda Williams will run in the women's 100 meter dash which will follow at 3:15 p.m.

The next scheduled race is the 800 meter distance with representatives from both the men's and women's teams set to compete for the Lakers. Ryan O'Neill, Michael Rand, Riley Sponseller, and Eric Somsky will run in the event for the men's team at 3:25 p.m. while Sofia Salazar and Sydney Kapushinski will represent the women's team at 3:35 p.m.

Curlett will take part in his second individual event of the day at 4:15 p.m. as he is slated to race in the 200 meter run. Sarah Votruba and Gabrielle Minier will represent the Lakers in the women's 200 meter event at 4:25 p.m.

In the final individual event of the day, Skylar Williams will be competing in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase event at 4:40 p.m.

The Spartan Invitational will conclude with the men's 4x400 meter relay at 5:10 p.m. and the women's 4x400 meter relay at 5:15 p.m. The Lakers will have teams participating in both races.
