Preview: Track & Field Set to Open 2022 at the SVSU Classic

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams will compete at Saginaw Valley State University's SVSU Classic on Friday, Jan. 14 in University Center, Mich. 

The field events will start at 2:30 p.m. while the running events are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Field Events

The high jump competition will open the schedule of events at 2:30 p.m. while the long jump, weight throw, and shot put will follow with 3:00 p.m. starts. The triple jump will follow the long jump event while the pole vault competition will wrap up the field events at 3:00 p.m. 

Sophomore Noah Murray, who had a solid first year for the Lakers last season, will be participating in the long jump and the pole vault events. Riley Nichols and Riley Traver will round on the jumpers on the LSSU men's team as both will be competing in the long jump. 

Freshman Kara Mosher will be the lone Laker female competing in the jump events at the SVSU Classic. Mosher will represent the Lakers in the pole vault event. 

In the throwing events, junior Timothy Howes, freshman Kamuran Ramadanov, and sophomore Ryan Reiniche will each be competing in the men's shot put and the weight throw events.  The LSSU women will be represented by sophomore Maddison Gould and senior Brittney Ryan in the throwing events. Both will be competing in the shot put and weight throw. 

Running Events

The majority of the Laker athletes will be competing in the running events at the SVSU Classic. The first event on the slate is the 600 meter run. Senior Leah Bell and freshman Sydney Kapushinski will be competing for the Lakers in the women's race while freshman Michael Rand and junior Eric Somsky will race in the same distance in the men's event. 

The 60 meter hurdles will follow for the Lakers as the team will be represented by freshman Judson Fargo and junior Andrew Giddens. In the next event, the 60 meter dash, the Lakers will be represented on both the men's and women's side. Murray and Nichols will race in the men's event and sophomore Jenna Fleming will participate in the women's race. 

The Lakers will then prepare for the mile run event as the team has a number of participants scheduled to compete. Junior Roy Bowman, senior David Mitter, sophomore Aaron Nachazel, sophomore Ryan O'Neill, and freshman Riley Sponseller will run in the men's distance. Freshman distance runner Olivia Stevens will compete in the women's race. 

In the mid-distance races, the SVSU Classic will open with the 400 meter run and the Lakers will have Rand, and Somsky partaking in the men's event. Kapushinski will race in the women's 400 meter event. The 800 meter run will follow with O'Neill and Sponseller partaking in the event for the Lakers. The 200 meter dash comes next with Mosher competing in the women's race and Fargo, Giddens and Traver running in the men's race. 

The 3000 meter run will wrap up the events for the Lakers at the SVSU Classic as the team has four male distance runners taking part in the competition. Freshman Reese Camp, freshman Dominic Comfort, senior Kendal Delpiere and freshman Skylar Williams are slated to compete for the Lakers.
